Hi everybody,

Im new to this site and could really use some advice. Im starting LSU traditional BSN program. Was wondering if anyone has any advice about what to expect and what I should do to prepare. Also if anyone is actually a student at LSU that would help or if they are starting in the Fall as well.

I bought the Anatomy workbook (and a used textbook) on line and saved a bundle. Your mileage may vary.

As for prepping before classes start, before I started in August I read chapters 1-7, 9-11, & 13. I can't say that it did or didn't help to read that much in advance. If I had to do it again, I would concentrate on Chapters 1-5 before class started so I would have the foundations. Make sure you can answer all of the chapter questions and the online quizes. There was minutia in the book that I didn't think we would get into but I was wrong. It is ALL fair game on the exams. And it all builds on the previous material to an extent that surprised me so if you don't have the "basics", you will be struggling to keep up.

oo ok. what is the name of the book and workbook so i can start browsing around if u dont mind?

and yea i started reading chapter 1 today so ill def focus on 1-5 more than the others. thanks! what would u say was the hardest class for u and y? I'm def. nervous/excited so i know what im gettin myself into but i also want to hear what people have to say about it ya kno?

The anatomy book we used is "Human Anatomy" by Marieb, Mallatt, & Wilheim. I used it twice. The workbook (which I used constantly) is "Atlas of Anatomy" by Gilroy, MacPherson, & Ross.

I already have a degree and about 150 credit hours. And nothing I have ever taken was as tough as this physiology class but my background is not in physical sciences.

yea i heard physiology, no matter how much experience you have, is the toughest. im jus going to try my hardest and hope that works.

how much did u say u paid for the anatomy book and workbook?

Unfortunately, I don't remember since it was so many books ago. I do remember that I saved a little on the Atlas and a lot on the textbook b/c it was used, as compared to the bookstore's prices. In fairness, the LSU bookstore's prices are not bad. But if you are willing to hunt for bargains, you can almost always do better. It is getting harder to compare b/c they are starting to bundle course books together.

I keep calling the "Atlas of Anatomy" a workbook and I apologize because it is not. It is actually softbound reference book. Most of my softbound books are true workbooks but this one is not.

thanks so much beejaycee! that was super helpful! I always get nervous about buying the older edition of the textbooks and then almost always regret it if I buy the newer edition.

what about the "fundamentals of nursing" book for the intro to professional nursing class? is that book necessary? can we get by with older editions?

sounds like anatomy and phys are the ones we need to worry about though.

This is just my opinion but I would not chance an older version of the Fundamentals book because you will be using it for more than one class. For the "Intro" class, an older version would likely be okay because they are careful to cover the material that they test on but I can't speak to what happens in the later classes that use it. But if you buy something older than the 6th edition now, by the time you get to the next class, there might be a 7th edition and a lot will have changed.

(and not to seem totally crazy) but do you know anyone who used the older edition of of the physiology book? there is an 80 dollar price difference between the 11th and 10th edition.

Assuming you have the same instructors we had (very likely) and the same general format we had (very likely), if I were taking your class, I would buy the older book and use the money I saved to buy the Physio BRS I mentioned earlier.

The course coordinator will tell you that the book is meant to supplement the lectures, not vice versa, and one lecturer will tell you that his lectures are meant to stand alone and are not closely tied to the book. The other 2 lecturers give very thorough and complete lecture series that, even though close to the book, are very good on their own. There are PowerPoints given for the lectures.
