LPN student starting IV Therapy

Published

Hi everyone,

I hope you guys can help me with something. I am a second semester LPN student getting ready to start IV Therapy. I am very excited about this but also incredibly intimidated by it as well. I thought it would be great to get as much knowledge as I can before I go into my clinical. I know nothing can prepare you for the hands on experience but if I can get as much information as possible I will be prepared to answer all my instructors questions and will have a better understanding of how it all comes together. So if all you experienced LPN's can give me some information on what to be prepared for it would be great, common meds, terminology, equipment used, maybe even a story or two about your first time with IV therapy.

Thanks for all your help:nurse:

Hey!! I'm in the exact same boat! 2nd semester LPN student about to start IV therapy as well! I'm going to Jefferson college in hillsboro, mo. Where do u attend? I'm interested to see any replies here as well. I'm quite excited to start IV therapy, but just as nervous too!

I was an LPN for 25 years when I got my IV certification. I went through a pharmacy that sponsored and taught the class in 2 Saturday 8 hour sessions. We had to get 3 IV sticks to get our IV certification cards. Some of us who were not working in areas that had any chance of doing that were able to do our three sticks before leaving the final class, providing we could convince our fellow students to agree to be stuck multiple times. I was able to do it then but have not had to do it since. Luckily, the work I do now is in EMR implementation, so I do not have to worry about it, for the time being. Good luck...don't get overly anxious about it...you'll do fine. :smokin:
