LPN - Night Shift

Midnights? My body and mind feel like they're in a time warp! I'm part-time and thought I'd sleep in the day time on my days off. But, it isn't working out that way. I feel like I'm missing out on parts of my life. Like sunshine and people that sleep at night. Any suggestions? I have no problem staying well awake while I'm at work on midnights. I did buy a "Happy Light" already.

I currently work three 12-hour night shifts per week. My work hours are from 6:00pm to 6:30am. I usually sleep from about 9:00am to about 4:00pm, slowly get dressed and groomed, then make the 15-mile commute to my workplace.

I once worked five 8-hour night shifts from 10:00pm to 6:30am. Back then, I worked out at the health club from about 7:00am to about 8:30am, went home, showered, got redressed, ran errands, and slept from about noon to about 8:00pm.

Any suggestions?

Exercise helped to regulate my sleep/wake cycles. Also, dietary modifications help. While at work, graze on lightweight foods such as soup, string cheese, yogurt, trail mix and fresh fruits. Finally, if you're into coffee or tea, the caffeine may help.

I worked my first nocturnal shift last weekend..3 rockstar energy drinks and a coffee later, I was delirious! lol I definitely am an AM shift worker; thank God for me that was just a one time thing. I'd suggest stay active during your shift, walk around a lot. I didn't do that and that why I was soo sleepy!

It is a hard transition. I used to wake up at noon and freak out because half the day was gone. In time your body will adjust but keep an eye open for any openings so you can get back to the sunlight!
