LPN job options

I've been an LPN for about a year and a half working in a LT rehab facility and currently assisted living. I'm getting very fed up with the so called "shortage" of staff. I know this topic has been beaten into the ground but until the "powers that be" move from the simple spreadsheet formula for staffing and move to acuity staffing, it will remain the same. It also always, always, always comes down to staffing as being the biggest expense of operations. We are not dealing with ball bearings in a factory.

Enough of my rant. I want out of long term care (and know I don't want an acute care setting) but don't know what resource lists options for non-floor nurse positions. I know of clinics and possibly corrections. Is there a resource or can some members of this community share what other areas an LPN may work?

Since you have been in LTC for a while, have you thought about working in an office as a MDS nurse. You can go to www.aanac.com for more info. They get paid well and you deal with paperwork.....Just a thought. Best wishes!

Thanks, I'll check out that link. At the rehab facility, one of the things that fried me was the library of manual charting that had to be done in multiple charts in a very short period of time. Even so, I'll look into your suggestion-it's probably much different than my past experiences have been.

I am a LPN, have been for 13 years. I have worked in MD offices and the hospital. I Loved, LOVED, the hospital. At first I was leary of the hospital too, but once I learned everything and got comfortable, I fell in love with it. I am now back in school for my RN. My advice, go back and get your RN. With a bridge program you can get it in less than 2 years. Do more, make more money, have many, many more options. Do it now, don't wait 13 years like I did!

LPNs can also be found in hospice, dialysis centers, home health, private duty, doctors' offices, clinics, urgent care centers, prisons/jails, blood banks, group homes for clients with mental retardation, psychiatric facilities, operating rooms, and insurance companies.

After a year of working LTC, I just got a job in my local high school as a 1:1. I ride the sped van to & from school with a medically fragile child. During the school day I monitor the child and work as a 1:1 teacher's aid. I like the pace, the benefits, and the M-F hours.

I read "sped" and didn't know what it meant.

In this world of an acronym for everything, why do you say that "sped" is degrading or derogartory?

cause this is the "word" the kids use to refer to the special education kids...."sped"....oh so and so is a sped....

i worked with emotionally and physically handicapped in the school system......plus i have kids(my own) who used it....and i sat them down to ask them how they would feel........

hey...cool job tho....i would love to work m-f at a school 1-1.........actually i did for one year way back when.....the only thing she needed done was to be straight cathed......and i wasnt even a nurse then...just a teacher asst....i didnt mean to sound rude or mean....it is just that term.....it must be PMS,more sensitive......but i do know first hand that it hurts the kids who are in the special education classes........
