LPN to CRNA, lol.

Published

Hello,

I am on the ground floor of my CRNA education.

I have a goal though, and I am sticking to it.

I am going into LPN school and by 2009 will have graduated.

Are there LPN jobs in the ICU available for new graduates?

I would like to get in the ICU then LPN-RN and stay in ICU

until I get my online BSN option out of the way.

I would have ample experience (at least per the requirements)

My aim is to get a job at the VA here in town. I have a very good

contact and am waiting until LPN graduation.

Thank you,

Joel

There may be some hospitals around that still do that ( I know they did around 10 yrs ago). I haven't seen any in the hospitals I am familiar with though.

Joel,

It depends on the hospital. The ICU I work in does not use LPN's. Contact the hospitals in your area to find out. If they don't, start on a tele floor as an LPN, or start as an aide in the ICU while you're in school. That will make your transition to ICU smoother and may get you into the ICU more quickly as well. Good luck to you! Keep us posted. There's a great deal of info here to help all the way through your education.

[First let me say that I am a LVN and congrats on your upcoming graduation... I think you will have a very hard time finding a hospital that will place a LVN in ICU. First, there are limitations on the drugs a LVN can push (of course this depends on state and facility), a LVN cannot do the initial assessment (hospital only) and LVN's are suppose to handle stable patients. ( I say "suppose" cause we all know that any patient can turn unstable real fast regardless of where you are working) . LVN's are just not provided the training to work in the ICU. I have been a LVN for many years and know my limitations ...one being ICU the other L & D. My recommendation is get some good med-surg experience and obtain your RN license then move into ICU. Then by the time you get your BSN you will have at least one year in ICU...

Joel,

Ever thought of going across the border? lol. I'm from NE Oklahoma. In the ICU I started out in, just over 2 years ago, there was a new LPN grad hired. She was already enrolled in an LPN to BSN prgram and I think that may have been a condition of her hiring right into the ICU.

It's a huge hospital and high acuity. She graduated with a BSN a year later and already has a year of experience under belt. I am sure that you would still have to have another year of ICU experience as an RN Before applying to CRNA school, but it would look pretty good on a resume having the 2 years total experience.

She did everything and took care of everything (disease and patient wise). I don't know about AR but in OK an LPN can document training on IV therapy/pushes and can give them.

It sure wouldn't hurt to ask a hospital if you were enrolling in an LPN to RN or LPN to BSN program if they would consider hiring you directly into ICU.

Hope that helps and PM me if you want more details on the hospital here.

Okie
