LPN Career Path

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hey everyone! So i am planning on getting my masters to become an NP but of course before that happens, i'll have to get my LPN first! I see that the majority of LPN jobs available are only nursing homes, which i'm not at all interested in. Does anybody know if an LPN can get hired in labor and delivery unit if they plan on getting their BSN? Or maybe an OB/GYN office? Thanks in advance for any feedback! :)

LPN has a limited scope of practice. There is ZERO reason you must graduate from a practical nursing program (vocational education not collegiate education) why not do your ASN or BSN? Most APN programs seek RN experience. You cannot get RN experience as an LPN. LPNs are not permitted to monitor epidurals, most states don't permit LPNs to do IV push or monitor oxytocin (necessary in obstetrics). LPNs cannot do initial assessments LPNs cannot do blood transfusions. An OBGYN office most often hires medical assistants with RNs for patient assessment and education. RNs must assess and create the patient education plan, LPNs can reinforce patient education initiated by the RN.

Why must you get your LPN first? There aren't college credits associated with most PN programs so it won't count much towards BSN or MSN

In the valley, meaning CA most hospitals got rid of LVNS. The times my granpa woukd get sick I would be wih him at the hospital and would ask career advice. Most nurses would tell me that their hospital didn't hire no more LVNs. Im also trying to figure out which career path to go.

I'm currently a CNA at a Health and Rehab Center and I see that they do hire LVNs and RNs, sometimes the LVNs that have awhile working there are put as desk nurse like supervisors.
