Love that man! Miami on job ER training?

Published

okay, please bear with me.

not a nurse, but married to one; name says it all, crazy about my man.

after seven years of working full time while going to school (i'm sure lot's of you know what that's like) he's finally one clinical away from getting his rn in minnesota and is working med surge @ a local ltc unit. (please excuse if i get the abbeviations wrong).

his parents helped put him through school and it's time to give back to them.

they are moving to vero beach, so we have to move to florida to be near-by, do home care 1x a week, generally be there if they need us.

we are hoping for miami, because:

( a) heard it has some good hospitals and

b) we need diversity: different cultures, coffee shops, spoken word readings, all that artsy fartsy nonsense. (yes, i guess we also do need crime, traffic, tourists and the smell of other people's cooking, since you don't get one without the other. we're a little peculiar, it's true:monkeydance:).

please, no horror stories or "hate where i live" answers, this move is not optional.

that being the case, hubby asked that i do some research for him.

he's caught up in the usual med surge-for- 2-years-get-experience versus go-directly -to -desired field -and -get -trained -there dillemna, w. lots of good advice from both sides of the debate.

so here's the questions (finally):

are there any e.r.s or i.c.u.s in miami area that offer on job training?

(called preceptorships, or is that a term for a floor manager?

no need to answer that, just wanted to show how uninformed i am.)

if so, what was it like?

thank you so much for taking the time to answer. i really appreciate it. i am so, so, proud of my husband for achieving this goal he set for himself. . he's so excited to learn more, comes home grinning from ear to ear when he's been able to help someone. he's got real compassion and an intense, restless intelligence.

of course this also makes him a hyper-active, multi-tasking maniac who hates to sit still when he's not talking w. someone.

so what do you guys think?

good er material?

i encouraged him to go into nursing because it's always been my experiences that nurses rule. i've been in quite a few hospitals w. various illness and don't remember much about the doctors. a couple of good nurses, however, i will never forget.:heartbeat

Not real close to Vero but not too bad for 1xweekly visits:

http://www.baptisthealth.net

they are hiring for the E.R. at the new Homestead Hospital.

It is also just 20 miles north of Key Largo

I know of several new grads that were hired straight to the ER

good luck to you and your man!

I'd agree with the Baptisthealth.net.

Both Baptist hospital and South Miami (part of the Baptisthealth system) are MAGNET hospitals. I work at South Miami--its a GREAT place to work.

Good Luck!

memorial healthcare systems. . .in broward county...closer to vero than baptist health systems by like 45 min - 1 hr when there is no traffic.

Also places to live in broward county are cheaper...so are their taxes and car insurance even though they are catching up to Miami.

Applications can be filled out online. Good luck! ! !

Oh, Homestead hospital is way out in the boonies. . .and very south of vero beach...just an FYI. . .

the baptist health system has the leap program for critical care and it is both class room and in the clinic hours that must be " passed" before a job is secure. that is as close to otj training as you can get here. but you have to apply for it in addition to applying for the actual position. the homestead hospital is not a new hospital but an overhaul of the old hospital, if that matters. broward is a bit cheaper and it is a different enviornment, friendlier and less hectic, but that is changing too. all in all, where you live is a personal choice and it must reflect you and you have to have that feeling inside that tells you that you are in the right place. so, maybe you can visit, and look around? make out an itinerary of a few big organizations in both dade and broward and come see for yourself? if that is possible?

you might want to check your facts on the homestead hospital statement. www.baptisthealth.net they vacated the old hospital and have moved to the new facility which is more like a 5 star hotel. oh and it has completely paperless charting.:typing

to get hired as a new grad into the icu, you must have a gpa of at least 3.0 i think. baptist now has the 18week versant program for new grads, plus the 12 week critical care academy, which is integrated into the 18 week program. the ed has the leap integrated into the versant program. baptist is in the midst of a huge emergency department addition. they just hired about 20 new grads and will be adding to that at the next hire date for new grads is in august 08.

OMG, I have a friend who just moved to VERO beach.

the houses are beautiful there, and cheaper than miami prices.

Plantation general will do on the job training in the ER. no medsurg experience required. and plantation is closer to vero beach than miami.

You might want to check out the critical care units at Indian River Medical Center. The nurse manager is wonderful, and there is a lot of support, teamwork and staff education.
