Louisiana Nursing schools near Ft Polk

hello.....Well I am currently living right here on beautiful fort Polk. I am a RN with a BSN, and I am a home health nurse. there is not a whole lot here. Pretty much all there is is Northwestern state university, they have a small....smallllll few building here right next to the base, otherwise the bigger campus is about 1 hour away. so Pretty much I think that is really the only choice around here.

If there is anything I can try and answer for ya......just ask!

It's hard for me to get information about that area. Military folk just tell me that FT Polk has nothing to offer (but they are the ones who go out there for training for JRTC and are not stationed there).

I have been very worried about getting into an RN program while in Ft Polk. Is Northwestern State University difficult to get in to? Do you think that they have a waiting list? Or do you feel that I should just stay in Georgia to do my RN? Is there jobs for LPNs in that area?

Hello....sorry I haven't written....been busy..and then my son went and got sick! heheh....anyways...I don't really think it is hard to get into NSU, but I am not really sure on the nursing program. I think a lot of the students go to the main campus for that...which is about an hour away from fort polk.

Are you a spouse? a 'kid' of a military? why coming to fort polk? not too much here. If you have been grounded....and are able to get into a nursing program where you are from you may consider it in Ga. I think the clinicals at NSU range from BJACH (army hospital) all the way to shreveport. I am not sure. I actually went to nursing school in Illinois before I married my 'military' man. there are jobs for LPN's...are you a LPN? I do have to say the local hospital may advertise a 'big' bonus....but I can really say....I would never work there....

Just about every one of our patients that leave there after surgery get MRSA. and it is just a small hospital with a lot of over worked nurses. BJACH would be better to work.

I do say...If I were you...and I knew what I know...and I needed to get my RN....I prob wouldn't get it here.....

any questions...or anything I can help you with let me know...I do have a fellow nurse at work whose daughter is going through NSU nursing program....she has just started...so I can ask some questions if you would like!

sorry if I made you sad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I mean Fort Polk is not horrible....but it is small with not too much to do.

I'm a spouse. I was in the military for 4 years, but decided to get out because my husband decided to join the Army. Dual military seemed difficult on a marriage, especially after 9/11. So I decided to go to school.

Problem is it's difficult to get in to an RN program (even if I have a B.A.), but even harder when you know that you move every 2-3 years. So now, I am currently in a student in a LPN program in GA, (December I'll get my license). I was hoping just to enter an RN program and work part time as an LPN when I get to Ft Polk.

Ft Polk is my husband's next duty assignment for 2-3 years.

That was an interesting review on the local hospitals. I'm looking at CPOL to see if there are positions at BJACH (army hospital).

I already have an application to NSU. The hour drive (each way) seems like murder, but I just might have to do it.

Hi - Northwestern has an LPN to RN bridge program which is over distance learning to Leesville. When you get to Ft Polk go to the Leesville Campus of NSU -- ask for Debbie Hickman - she works with the ASN and LPN to ASN students. Good Luck -

check into the nursing homes in east texas

northwestern has a good nursing school but don't know how hard it is to get into...i know that a some other schools in the state have limited classes d/t the lack of instructors

I'll be graduating from the Louisiana State University at Alexandria ADN program next month. The campus is about an hour away from Ft. Polk, similar to the distance to the NSU campus. As another poster mentioned, NSU does offer some LPN - RN/ADN/BSN distance learning courses at Ft. Polk, but some must be taken in Natchitoches.

We have quite a few LPN - RN students in our graduating class. They started on the accelerated track during the summer of '05 and will finish with us ... 3 semesters later. The only obstacle for your getting into either the NSU or LSU-A programs is that both require at least a year of practice as a licensed LPN for admission to the accelerated programs.

Considering that you already have a B.A., you may actually have a number of the prerequisites for admission to a standard ADN (or BSN) program. I had a B.A. and an M.A. when I began my ADN program and It's taken me 5 semesters to finish. Only 2 of them were primarily prerequisites. Your mileage may vary. If you've taken intro. chemistry and lab, college algebra, and the first anatomy/physiology class/lab - then you are eligible to apply for clinicals.

I suggest that you review the links on that page and see if it's something you might consider. The "Application for Nursing 1016" lists the prerequisites for admission to the clinical component.

You can review all your options at that school with the drop-down menus at the top of that page. NSU, as you'll see, offers a BSN degree as well as an ADN. They also offer classes at Ft. Polk, Alexandria, and Shreveport.

Now.... hopefully this at least leaves you a little less in the dark about what might be available to you down here. Give a yell if there's anything I can clarify.

Hello Everyone,
I am currently a LVN student in Georgia. I have a B.A. and have all the pre-requisites for an RN program (A&P, Microbio., Chem. & Statistics). My family is moving to the Ft Polk region and we will in that area for 2-3 years. I would like to continue my studies to become an RN.
Does anyone know what schools are in the area? I am looking for any school that has either an bridge RN program, Accelerated RN or traditional program (transfer students accepted) So far I found NSU at Leesville, but that's about it...
