I've heard some people say that SATA questions are just considered an alternate format question just as drag and drop, audio, calculation questions, etc are, and being an SATA doesn't necessarily mean it's a harder question. Other people have said that you're doing well if you get lots of SATA.

I should say that I think that they're harder. But then I HATE SATA questions!
I've heard some people say that they must have been doing well because the computer kept giving them SATA's. Is this true? Or is it just luck of the draw? I've also read several that say they didn't have many SATA's at all.
I have no real confirmation as to which it is but I know I had a TON of SATA. There were times I'd have 2-3 in a row and go back and forth to SATA every other question. I had instructors that say they are higher level questions but I don't have anything to back that up, only anecdotal info. I had 75 questions and I know at least 20 were SATA but it could have easily been 30+ given that I didn't keep track during the exam.
Like most people have stated on here, it truly is the luck of the draw. There is over 3,500 questions the NCLEX has in its question bank. So people may have 1/3 be OB, 1/3 be mental health and 1/3 be med-surg and each has a value for higher understanding. SATA are a higher type level of question because you have to apply and analyze each answer (These are considered the higher level questions). But analysis and application could be a prioritization or medication calculation/titration. I myself had about 15-20 SATA and a TON of prioritization questions and passed in 75. Just down to the luck of the draw of the type of application and analysis questions in the end, which means it could be a prioritization, medication, SATA, drag and drop or audio question.
