My husband just got a promotion to Maitland, Florida. I am an L.V.N. in California. My problem is that I just graduated and recieved my license this month, so I have no experience. I have read a little that the salaries are significantly lower.
- Is it really as low as $15.00?
- Next, does anyone know of any bridge programs in that area. Are they hard to get into? Waiting lists? (I plan on getting my R.N.- I figure I'm almost half way there anyway).
- Is the humidity that bad?
- Are hurricanes a problem for that area? - Is that why the cost of living is lower?
- Or, is it the alligators. Are they really that huge of a problem in that area. I understand there are many lakes around...
- Or, do I have it wrong and the cost of living is the same as here.
- Is Maitland a large city? Or, a small retirement or a family community. Are most people normal and friendly? Are there alot of "bad neighborhoods", or gangs? or anything I should know about?
- Are the schools good, teachers, scores, buildings in good condition? Dtr is 4...
-Are there alot of freeways?
- How close is Disneyworld?
I don't expect anyone to be a financial advisor. I just need a little help, a few opinions would be greatly appreciated. As I am FREAKING OUT!!!
- Would a salary of $65,000 a year be enough to fully support a small family of 3? (my income not included, to see if going back to school would be feesible)
- If not, my worst case scenerio of $15.00 an hour, added to that, would we still be struggling?
Taking into consideration normal bills, Rent, cable, daycare, car payment, ins., and a couple credit cards, but nothing extravagent...
We have only untill thursday-2/29, to give them an answer.
If anyone can share thier thoughts and opinions I am greatfull to hear it. Mabey you have some insight or information I have yet to consider.
Thank-you, for reading my rant. I am anxious for a reply.
Respectfully,

Hiya!
Maitland is a nice town. I don't know what the LVN/LPN rates are as I am a RN. I would say they are extremely less than CA.
There are plenty of colleges in the area offering bridge programs. I do not know if there is a wait list. You'd have to contact them individually.
The humidity can be bad...especially during August.
We've only had a problem with hurricanes in 2004 & 2005. There's usually always a hurricane warning each year, but 2004 was the first time in a long time that we had been hit directly.
The cost of living is low when compared to CA, but for some reason, it's gone up over the past few years & I can't figure out why. The wages have not increased, but housing has doubled & tripled in the last 5 years.
Maitland is a small city just outside of Orlando. It's got it's good parts & it's bad parts...like most towns. I don't know about the schools.
I-4 is very close by as well as other interstates & turnpikes.
Disney World is about 30-40 miles...very close, but not too close. There is also Sea World, Universal & the other Disney parks all in the same area practically.
I think $65,000 is a decent income for that area. It's far above the average family income.
What did you decide?
Jen
Thankyou for responding. Thursday has come and gone and I'm so scared and undecided, I told him to go without me. Of course he's still trying to talk me into that. My family is ready to dis-own me if I go, really just my mom. I feel like if I dont go, that we're passing up a once in a llife time opportunity. If my mom was'nt so against me going, I would of had my bags packed already. I don't know what to do. We are supposed to fly out March 13th, to see and get an idea of where to look for an apartment. But on the 16th My mother, sister and myself have had an outing planned for over a month. They already live 4 hrs away. I don't know how to break the visit, and she would have to be the one to watch my daughter, and I dont think she will. I am in a pickle... I have not had this much drama in a long time. I hate it..
It sounds like it's such a nice place to live. That I would be able to go back to school to get my R.N., without much financial hardship. That my daughter would be in a nice area, still close to Disnyland and more. If I could only convince my mom...
Thankyou so much for your reply. I really appreciate it.

Hi, you don't need to FREAK OUT about moving to Maitland, it is a wonderful family area, I live about 5mins away in Casselberry, which is also very nice. The schools are really good as well. As far as bridge programs, I know that Seminole Community College has a bridge program and they don't have a waitlist, they go by academic merit only and it only takes a year from what I've heard. Your pay will be significantly lower, because cost of living is sign lower. I realize that this is past the time for you to make your decision but hopefully this will help you when doing your hunt. Hope everything goes well!!
Thank You so much for the reply. I'm scared, but excited! We fly out on the 13th- this Tuessday! Mainly to look for an apt.
I would really appreciate anyone who could point me in the right direction of good apartments, or know anyone renting a house. We will be moving there at the end of this month so when I come out I need to find one fast!!!
