I have a patient who is interested in a Lotus birth. Have any of you helped with this, and what problems or concerns did you have? Thanks!

I have never had any experience with this. I,personally cannot imagine this.
I guess if it does no harm to the baby, to each their own.

hi there!
i seem to recall, there is a very lengthy thread about lotus birthing here someplace----let me dig it up. but be forewarned, it got quite ugly and controversial at times.
here it is:

Happy Reading!
Yeah Deb. I personally find it overall kinda icky. As I said though, if a person can be absolutely sure that no actual harm will come to the infant then what ever. I would be very concerned about that though.
Thanks, I read through the posts and would like to avoid all that discussion :) I just wondered if anyone had experience with it. THis lady is planning ahospital birth and I know all the nurses will be freaked out. I'm just planning ahead...
where I practice for infection control purposes, this would not be very easy to allow. It's clear why. And yes, practiced imprudently, it could cause problems for the newborn.
For the record, I am really not looking forward to this!!!!!!!!
I laughed at some of the posts from the links; gotta laugh now because I surely can't when I am respectfully fulfilling the wishes of my patient.
I would love to find some good solid evidence that this practice is not good in a hospital, but there aren't any studies. Just "common sense".
I am asking the parents to discuss this with their pediatrician, though... (Oh I can see it now. No doctor, I am not the weird one:chuckle )
