Looking to travel nurse

Published

I'm looking to start travel nursing part-time. I'm 22 years old, I started working as an RN in January with my temporary license and I passed boards in early March. I have been working on a med-surg unit since. I worked as a PCT in the E.R. for 5 months during my last semester of nursing school. The biggest thing I am trying to overcome as a new nurse is being pushed to use more critical thinking and working on my own without being in a familiar environment. I have come to have a family at the hospital that i am currently employed at and I think I'm comfortable, if not too comfortable and feel that I need to be pushed. Any advice?

The reality? I don't know of any organization that would accept a travel nurse with less than 5 years of experience in the area in which they are going to be working. Travel nurses are expected to "hit the ground running" with a very high level of clinical expertise. They cost a lot more than employed staff, so employers are not willing to provide a paid orientation to develop skills that they were supposed to have in the first place. "Orientation" will consist of just the bare minimum that is required. Travel nurses in specialty areas are expected to have specialty certification.
