Looking for a quick route into nursing school

Published

I'm looking to get become an LPN, and I'm looking to get it in 1 year. I wouldn't mind getting an BSN or an Associates.

I already have a B.S. in psychology from Brooklyn college, but i have a really weak GPA (2.4) I made the mistake of trying to take a class i failed 3 times failing each time which hurt me significantly (Art of all things...) . My Major GPA is 2.9. I have taken Organic Chem © General Chemistry (B) Anatomy (A) Physiology © Statistics (D) Microbiology (D) Cell Biology (B) Most of my psych classes are A's and B's.

With those grades considered, which schools should i be applying to? Keep in mind that i am willing to retake statistics and micro biology over again in the spring if i have to and start nursing in the summer or fall.

Also, the degree doesn't matter for now. I'm looking to just finish something in a year and start making money.

The reason i ask is, my GPA is keeping me from applying to accelerated BSN programs, so i thought i'd get an associates or RN first but am unsure which schools i should be looking at. Tuition isn't a problem, neither is relocation upstate.

I looked into College of Staten Island and Kingsborough CC, but they both require you take some core prerequisite courses before you start the the nursing classes despite having a strong educational background.

So does anyone know any schools that have programs that i can apply to now without strict requirements that are set in stone, starts next summer/fall, is accredited, and can be done in a year?

Also, is there a huge pay difference between someone with an LPN, LPN + Associates degree in nursing and LPN + BS degree ?

Thanks in advance, i look forward to your input and help

I'd advise you to do a lil more research since there is a difference in pay b/w LPN & R.N. And they each have a different scope of practice. You need to know what your getting yourself into before you take the plunge. Both programs are extremely intense, & keep in mind that your previous degree doesn't give you an advantage against other candidates.

Since you have a low GPA, you have a much better chance of obtaining your LPN first, but apply to other 4 yr programs, anyway, if your pre-req grades are high (A's and B'S). Most LPN programs don't let you transfer any college credits in their program and rely strictly on your highschool GPA only. In general, they are alittle easier to get into. Best of all, once you graduate and start working, some jobs even contribute towards your education if you further your education, such as going for a ASN or BSN. Either way, schools accept LPN's much faster (but keep that GPA above a 2.8 to be considered; colleges are still picky). If your scores on the pre-req's are high (I mean like A's & B's), then you may get lucky. Most colleges insist on a minimum of a 3.0 GPA. You should also look into buying books based on what it's like to be a nursing student--they give you helpful tips, including the differences between LPNs, RNs, etc. It's important to do independent research b/c nursing school is neither cheap nor easy. Good luck.

And another thing, don't just look into the CUNY schools (I noticed that in your post). They are almost impossible to get into unless your overall GPA is close to a 4.0. Applicants flood those types of schools first b/c their tuition is cheaper. Take out private loans and apply to private schools, such as Molloy, and definately apply to all the LPN schools you can find (maybe even a few in NJ if you have to).

LPN is usually the fastest route to working because there are fewer prereqs and you can usually complete the program in a year. However, the job opportunities are usually different and the pay lower for LPNs than for RNs. In some areas, LPNs aren't hired for hospital work. Nursing homes are probably one of the biggest employer of LPNs. Other nursing jobs out there, like at clinics, can be hard to come by and tend to pay less since such non-shiftwork is desirable for many.

As another noted, coursework from LPN programs may not count towards to an eventual degree (ASN/BSN).

Also, know that outside of administrative positions, whether or not someone has a non-nursing bachelor's degree doesn't usually factor in for hiring and wage considerations. One's nursing license and work experience as a nurse are what count.

Good luck getting more info about your choices!

normally i would advise any to just go straight for there RN, but seeing that it's very competitive to get in RN school now and your GPA is questionable? i would say LPN is the best route to go now then do a LPN-RN bridge program, plenty of them out there
