Looking for post-op bariatric surgery patients for dissertation study.

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Hi all,

I posted this in the nurse researcher forum but it may be better here...

I'm a DNP student and I need some help finding post-bariatric surgery patients for my dissertation study. I would love to get patients who are at least 1 or 2+ years out of the surgery. Does anyone know of a forum with post-surgical bariatric patients where I can contact the webmaster and email forum members my survey? Also, if anyone has any other ideas of how to find this population, I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

If you do a google search of "bariatric surgery", "weight loss surgery", or "gastric bypass" you may find some online community groups.

I am 1 1/2 years post banding, what is it that you would like to know?

Thanks for the response.

I have done some googling and have come up with a couple of sites that I think like. There's also a couple of clinics that I'm talking to but they are small (they perform around 70 surgeries/year), their programs are new, and I may need up to 100 or more post-op patients. I'm still figuring out the best way to do it - go online, stay with the clinics or do both?

I just wanted to get some input from people who might have some experience and be able to point me the right direction.

My survey is not ready yet but is going to be about 50 questions on eating behaviors, surgical expectations and body image. It should take about 15-20 minutes to complete. I'm not allowed to enroll anyone into the study until I defend my study proposal and go through my school's IRB process. Which means that any responses that I get from the survey now can't be used for my dissertation study.

However, I'm going to need help testing out the survey once I complete it so if you're interested, I'll send it to you once it's ready.

Thanks for the tip Maseca,

and for the offer to help. I'll save your info and if you're still interested about a month from now, I'll email you the survey to test out.

I too am post op, 5 years RNY so can pm me when ready although I was done in the UK if that makes any difference

Obesityhelp.com is the best resource online. Without knowing the focus of your research, I would HIGHLY recommend that you look at 5+ year post-op patients for long-term data...unless you are only interested in the "honeymoon period" effect of WLS. I am 7+ years post-op and would be more than happy to help you.
