I just started my FNP program and also live in east tn. I am so terrified about finding preceptors! For those that you have lined up how did you go about finding them? For your women's health have you looked into your local health department? I was thinking I might try this avenue as most obgyn practices in this area are contracted with several med schools. Good luck and any advice would be greatly appreciated!
The ones that I have lined up I got by walking in off the street and asking. As for have my ob gyn. I have called east tennessee health department over 20 times, the lady over this has never once responded. I have emailed her and called. i have even sent an email to the head of the health department and no luck. this person is responsible for all the health deparment in east tn. also i have went to and called 20 diffrent ob gyn places with no luck. i have even been looking for place as far a 1.5 to 2 hours away. guess i will start looking in ashville nc and bristal tn/va.
Guys, i do not understand it, I have called over 20 ob places and i can not get anywhere. I keep getting the office managers voice mails telling me to leave a message and they will call back. I have not had any of them call back as of yet. Why is this? Why are so many of our NP not willing to precept. At one time you were in my shoes needing someone to mentor you. Is there no one on this site that can help me out? I am willing to work any rotation. I can send my vita to you. Come on guys, surly you can or know someone in the area that can be a preceptor to me. Thanks for looking guys.

Hi Cetessa,
Good luck!
I am starting the RODP MSN program in Jan. 2014. ETSU will be my home school.
Are you in the Johnson City, TN area? Have you tried the ETSU J.C. Downtown clinic?
Johnson City Community Health Center
Do you have any advice about the program? I think I will start part-time.

yes i tried both of those. right now i found a place that is awesome that i hope to get in with. it is a christian faith based place that is in the process of reviewing applications for preceptors. i did not know a place like this existed but it seem like a perfect fit for me. they truly try and get help to the community . i keep praying that i am selected for this one. as for advice on the program, just take your time. taking to many classes may overwhelm you. it is good to start out part time at first to see how the work load effects you. to me advanced pharmacology and advanced pathology were the hardest. i would recommend not taking them together in the same semester. on allnurses.com i have read that advanced research was hard. i thought it was not hard but very very time consuming. there was a lot of papers to write that require a lot of sources. lastly, go to the rodp bookstore to see what books you will need, get the isbn number then look on ebay and amazon as they are a lot cheaper. hope this help. good luck to you, you will be fine in the program.
Thanks and good luck! I hope that preceptorship site works out...it sounds great!
I want to take research my first semester (and get it out of the way)...and just one other class so that I have 6 hours (to be able to get financial aid).
How was your Health Assessment clinical? I saw on a post from another student...something about videotaping (skills?) and sending in DVDs (?)

Getting 6 hours is what I am worried about. I really do not have anything left to take but FNP II and I have a preceptor for that in the spring. If i can not get a women s health I will only have 3 hours to take leaving me without financial aid. That is the reason I am freaking out so much. You can not take the advanced FNP practicum or Scholarly Synthesis/Research until the last semester. I did really well in Advanced Health Assessment. you have to video tape you examinations and mail them in. you can not upload the video to them or youtube you have to mail it in. you can have no editing to the video and you can not look around as if note are posted somewhere. if you do any of these things you get a 0 for the assignment. it is basically acting. all you have to do is know what you are doing and go over and over it until you have it down then do it for the camera. what is hard is when you replay the video and realize you missed something, you have to do the whole thing over again (no editing). my first video to me 5 hour to complete due to leaving our steps.
Thanks so much for the info. about the health assessment clinicals!!
Sorry if i end up posting this more than once, my internet connection is not cooperating.
If you don't get your OBGYN site and have to expand your search to Asheville, I think you may have a good chance at MAHEC Health Science Students/Office of regional Primary Care Education (ORPCE) HomeI believe they already have a contract with ETSU. Do the sites need to have a contract with RODP or with your home school?
Good luck!!
