Today I interviewed for a position on a child psychiatric unit of a local hospital with a great reputation and record for retaining employees! I am lucky in that this hospital has created some new positions recently. I hope to get the job!
I have also put in a couple of online applications to other hospitals in the area. One of them is fairly close to where I live; it is a regular hospital but with a large psyche unit where all ages are cared for. The other is a private hospital in Louisville KY; about 45 minutes from where I live. Somewhat of a drive, but if it's a good job, it would be worth it! =)
Also, count me as another (future) psychiatric nurse who uses Paxil. =) Does it seem like the nurses who have a lot of personal experience with physical pain/diseases do well in med-surge, and nurses who have experience with depression/anxiety/emotional pain, do well in psyche?

I recently accepted an RN position on a children's crisis intervention unit here in NJ. There are not many facilities in my state so it was somewhat difficult to find this position. It is also somewhat of a drive. I have been extremely interested in this field for some time now and am so excited to begin my new job!! I am also on antidepressants but weaning off as we speak. I believe those of us who have suffered with mental illness have more appreciation and compassion for psychiatric patients, so we are more drawn to them and eager to help. Just out of curiousity, what interests you in child/adolescent psyche? Good luck to you and let me know what happens! :)

how very exciting! i am keeping my fingers crossed for you! you are right--the people drawn to psyche probably have had at least some experience with mental illness. can you blame us? very few people decide to be horse trainers without ever riding a horse. ok. bad analogy.
