Specialties Triage

Published

I am an RN with case management, med-surg and ER experience. My child has a renal problem so, I stay home with her during the day and work approx two shifts a week at the local hospital, as float staff. My question is, how do you find a job in telephone triage? I have searched locally and have came up empty handed. Any advice???? Thank you

I lucked out. I live in Sacramento, CA and HBO/McKesson runs a TT center there (well, in Rancho Cordova-- suburb) that serves over a hundred insurers as well as the US military. Kaiser Permenente also has a large call center here that covers most of Northern and Central Cali. The chances are that if a large call center was in your area, you'd see the ads for them or hear about it.

However, all is not lost. Most RNs working in MD offices do telephone triage nursing, as well as supervision and QA duties. I really, really loved my job working as the RN at the family practice clinic for a residency program. It was great watching the new docs progress towards independance/maturity, the pace was great, lots of camaraderie, patients were mostly very happy campers, staff was close and supportive. Try looking for MD office jobs, or do a web search for residency programs in your area and see where their clinics are.

You could also try to see if HBO/McKesson has a triage center near you by doing a web search. I know they had 3 centers, and one of them was sort of midwest/west, and one was way east, in addition to the one in Cali.

I did straight Telephone Triage for about a year, and liked HBO/McKesson very much. I switched to Kaiser for more money, and within 3 months I had gone back to Home Health because of the stress and working conditions at the Kaiser call center. When I got the clinic job, it was very heavy on Telephone Triage and I was responsible for setting Urgent Care appointments. On Mondays, it wasn't unusual to have over 60 calls to take or return!
