looking for advice on documentation devices for EMR

Published

I am the director of nursing informatics at our hospital and we are instituting a new EMR. I would like so information regarding the type of devices other hospitals are using for electronic documentation. We are a small rural hospital with limited storage space so "WOW"s are not real practical. We are leaning towards tablets but not sure what type to get and not sure they are they answer. Also I am looking for other McKesson "Paragon" users.

Have you considered wall mounted wireless pc's? I have some experience implementing tablet PC's, and would HIGHLY suggest piloting them and various units from differing vendors on a unit prior to any commitment. While they sound nice, they provide some interesting challenges and obstacles.

I'd suggest you will get more bang for your buck with a variety.

Tablets are still pricey. Think about getting a small variety of devices - desktops, netbooks, notebooks, tablets and even handhelds.. if your budget and network architecture and vendor allow - can run on these types of devices.

If you are looking to stay with tablets - pilot a few from several different tablet vendors. Think about security, device tracking, screen realestate and power utilization - issues that come up with any type of hardware.

Good Luck
