Nursing Students General Students

Published

I have been reading the forums for a while now, but never participated and I thought I would ask a couple questions. A little history on me before we start, I am a nursing student (half way through the program) and am in Pediatrics now. I have six months left and am very concerned about being a nurse.

1. What medical conditions would destroy a nursing career? For example: ADD, seizures, learning disabilities, etc.

2. I have learned that while going through the nursing program I have a difficult time with multi-tasks and sometimes feel like I would be a bad nurse, no matter how much I have wanted to be a nurse and no matter how much I care about my patients. So, my question is, what area of nursing is low-key and slow to where I would function best? I have always been interested in cosmetics and would really like to get into laser hair removal and laser scar revision. I have also really liked the NICU. What are your thoughts?

THANK YOU!

Hi welcome to all nurses!

I am sure there are a lot of areas you can go into with having a short attention span, not sure NICU is one of them though. Best of luck to you!

If you are physically or mentally not capable of doing your job, those are the medical conditions that will hinder you. If ADD is so severe you can't function, or seizures are uncontrollable that you are unsafe, etc. There are many nurses with many medical conditions doing just fine, others become disabled with the same condition. It depends on the individual.

The problem is the low key, low stress jobs (like in plastic surgery) are the hardest to come by. Most require experience.

We all feel overwhelmed and incompetent at times in nursing school. What is the feedback from your instructors on your performances?

The main complaint I have from every clinical instructor so far is to assert myself more. For example, if a nurse I'm assigned to does not let me pass meds with her I need to find a new nurse who will let me pass meds.

So what would you suggest for me?
