A once close friend of mine, now just an acquaintance, I found out today that she has been having some problems. Apparently, she woke up about a year and half ago and hte right side of her body was numb. NOw, I hear it comes and goes, but mainly it comes. I was told by a friend who hung out with her yesterday that her right side is obviously weak. She can walk, but her foot drags. Her arm hangs there and she can't write very well anymore. She couldn't squeeze her own ketchup bottle, can't put her hair up in a ponytail anymore. She also bent over to pick something up and fell down. According to my friend, this woman has also had some slurred speech occasionally, too, but mainly has the weakness/numbness. (which has been progressive)
She's seen a few doctors about this, one told her it was because she was overweight (she was 5'3 and 190 pounds, but lost 50 pounds and still is having problems), told it could be a pinched nerve, etc. She saw a neurologist who said it might be MS and she's scheduled for a MRI today (on a Sunday, which I thought was odd).
SO she's seen a doctor and will soon find out whats up, but I was wondering what else it could be. Neuro isn't my speciality. I was thinking besides MS, maybe a small stroke, brain tumor, some sort of viral infection, etc.
What do you think? Just curious

Just to let you know MRI's are sceduled on sundays. I had one a couple of months ago. Now I am not a nurse but that sounds kinda like stroke symptoms. I dont know but could that be what it is?

I say it's a good thing the MRI is coming up soon and kudos to the doc who pulled the strings and ordered it for a Sunday. Probably the only time he/she could get it. Sounds like its urgent.
Keep us posted and good luck to your friend.
If I were to speculate which I don't like doing too often seeing as I'm only NSG 2......I'd go with the MS dx.

I know that none of ya'll can say for sure whats wrong with her, I am just curious as to what more experienced nurses than myself think. I've been out of school for 5 weeks now, and I work on a cardiac floor and havne't had any really neuro patients.
Thanks for the ideas
