The purpose of the question is to ascertain the perception of potential employers, right or wrong, in their analysis of ltac work as inpatient experience as valuable or not in the context of seeking work in a comprehensive hospital.
what experiences have members on this board had? I appreciate the serious advice!

In general acute care hospitals do not seem to value LTACH experience as highly as they should. It is not unheard of to make the transition, but it can be difficult.

What about rehab hospitals

Or psychiatric hospitals

Rehab hospitals fare about the same as LTACH. If you work at a psych hospital you would be able to get a position at an acute care facility that has a psychiatric floor and from there you might have an easier time transitioning to med-surg. But it will still be hard.

I don't have any useful information other than that I am in the same boat as nampa1. While in school I was strongly encouraged to work in long-term care and as a result have devoted almost 2 years since acquiring my RN license to working in long-term care. But now I am having a lot of difficulty finding work as an RN in acute care. The reason I am "back-tracking" to acute care is because I realized that I was not using a lot of the skills I learned in school and I feel like I was forgetting a lot of what I learned. There is a lot of value in just experiencing and managing the acute disease processes that can make a huge difference in your care in long-term care.

I have learned that if you want to make the leap from long-term care to acute care you have to either:

1) find a new grad program that will accept you; OR

2) really really really sell all of the experiences and skills that you used in long-term care.
