Locum work as a new grad?

Hey all!

I have less than a year left in my FNP program and was wondering what your thoughts are on new grads doing locum/travel assignments? I realize a more traditional job for 2-3 years to gain experience would be more ideal, but do options exist for this type of work?

Thanks!

Was something I briefly considered as a new grad. I do not think it would be ideal, perhaps consider locums once you are comfortable in your new position.

Barton associates is a locums site that I believe does place new grads. But again, just because they will find you work does not mean it is a path you should take. I would consider it an intense job with less resources and higher expectations in an already demanding career.

Thanks for the input! I certainly realize that getting some experience under my belt prior to doing locum work would be preferred (and probably the smart thing to do). But as a single guy, no kids (and previous travel RN experience) locum work definitely interests me, mainly for the travels. I’d love to hear from some folks who have jumped into locum work right out of school to get their view

Most locums agencies require at least 1 year of experience. As a new grad NP, you need A LOT of training, and most healthcare organizations are not going to do that for a locums. The hiring organizations will expect a locums to hit the ground running, as they are paying a great deal of money.

If you can, get into an NP residency or fellowship. Otherwise, look for a first job with an organization that has a good onboarding program and experience with new grad NPs.

After you have 1 to 2 years of solid NP experience, you can then go for locums.
