  1. Stonybrook or LIU?

Hi, all! I'm a pre-nursing student at a community college in California and I'll be applying to a few BSN programs here. However, I'm also interested in the BSN program at Stonybrook University (in Long Island, NY) and LIU (in Brooklyn, NY). I'm not eligible to transfer until Winter 2019 (Dec. 2019), but I'm trying to gather as much information as possible. It's been a challenge because neither school will meet with you unless you're already ADMITTED into the program.

I plan on attending an information session for Stonybrook. LIU doesn't have specific nursing information sessions. I've called and emailed them, but never got a response. I'll probably have to drop by when I plan my travels to NY :nailbiting:

If you're from out of state and have any experience with the BSN programs at either school, I'd love to hear your experience.

  • What was your GPA?
  • Did you already have experience in the medical field? (CNA, LVN, EMT, Phlebotomist, etc)
  • What is/was the cost of tuition? I'm extremely worried because I know I'll be paying an arm and a leg as an out-of-state student
  • How are the staff/instructors?
  • If you had to choose between the 2, which one would you choose?

Thank you all in advance! :)

I am from NYC and considered both schools for my nursing school career. Both schools do offer some info sessions. LIU just had an open house for specifically transfer students. I keep getting emails all the time. LIU is notorious for not responding to emails. As a transfer student you will not be eligible for in-state tuition so you will be spending a ton of money, especially at LIU. Stony Brook is cheaper; therefore, highly competitive. Even with a 4.0 GPA and all other fluff it is very hard to get into.

I saw they have info sessions at LIU for transfer students, but usually the SON will have their own detailed info sessions. It is definitely like pulling teeth when you're 3,000 miles away :-/

Really? I was under the impression that SBU was more expensive than LIU.

Thank you for your insight... Are you already in the application process? Are you also looking into Hunter-Bellvue?

Currently, I have a 4.0 GPA and some non-related volunteer work. I don't think letters of recommendation will be an issue, but I'm concernes because as of now I have no medical experience (through work or volunteering). I plan on doing that soon.

Hi, yes, SBU is a state university so its tuition is way cheaper than that of LIU, or any private school. I did consider Hunter. As a matter of fact, I was a student there taking my pre-reqs. But the amount of pre-reqs Hunter requires is insane. Besides, the competition is so fierce, even 4.0 GPA will not make a big difference. I do not want to spoil your hype, I think you still should apply. You never know!

Stony brook tuition in state is approximately 10,000 for in state students and 27,000 a year for out of state students. LIU is a private school so its one flat rate for students, approximately 35,000. These numbers are for living off campus, so if you decide to live on campus numbers will increase. Not sure if your familiar with NY but schools are are on opposite ends of NY and will have totally different cultures. Stony brook is far out east in the suburbs and LIU is in the heart of brooklyn and one train stop away from NYC. I've heard amazing things about stony brook from my professors, a lot of ground breaking science is taken place at stony brook. I've applied to stony brook in the past for their absn and was rejected. However, my experience with them was very positive, they was extremely organized!

Hi there! Yeah, I've heard Hunter is extremely competitive! It's one of the cheapest (nursing) schools in NYC, so I understand. I've done some more research and actually went to the school to speak to someone. I didn't expect any priority treatment, but I was coming from out of state to gather more information and the counselors were very unorganized. They basically kept referring me to the website, which is so outdated. I was shocked when I saw how run down the school looked. I was also discouraged when I heard that you have to be a student for atleast 1 semester before you're even eligible to apply. Meaning that I can transfer into Hunter and not even be accepted into the SON. I've also heard Hunter is difficult about accepting courses taken at other schools. So, now I've switched my focus towards LIU (I qualify for a merit scholarship there) and Lehman college in the Bronx.

Thank you for your insights! :)
