too little to be a nurse?

Nurses General Nursing

Hello everyone,

I have a dillema. I am a nursing student and recently got a job on the med\sug floor. I am 5 feet and 111 lbs. and I had 3 pts refuse my care in the same 12 hr day because of my size! One pt said that I was too young and too little to be working here and management should do something about that because it puts pts in danger and if nothing is done he will speak to administration:o . I admit that I am not strong, but I know how to get help and the correct was to move pts. I am a bit discouraged now. what do you do when this happens?

A friend of mine took care of Andre the Giant. A huge man (pro wrestler) I think he was 7'4" and 400-500 lbs. She was 4'11'' and maybe 110.

She was his very favorite nurse. He liked her because of her skills and her ability to help him laugh when he felt I'll. Unless you are on the psych take down unit size shouldn't matter

I love this post! Humor is a wonderful tool to use in unusual situations.

For myself, I'm 4'8", I am so used to things being larger that it's "normal". When I find things "my size" it feels strange. So when someone comments on my abilities to do something because of size, I remind them that I am used to it and have learned to compensate for the differences.

Since I am a pre-nursing student yet, I can only imagine my reaction to this problem. I do think that if a patient is unhappy with the nurse caring for him, for whatever reason, it should be changed if at all possible.

A patient or two who are difficult doesn't change who you are as a Nurse. Be proud , "stand tall" (pun intended) and enjoy your career!

Hugs!

thank you, everyone has been so encouraging. I went to clinicals today and didnt have a problem with any of my patients (I work at a different hospital than where my clinicals are done) 3 of the students went to watch card caths so I had 3 pts to take care of (mine and 2 others) and I was told that I did very well and the patients loved me so that also encouraged me (one of my patient's was 400lbs and she was comfortable with my care). fyi this is my first experiences in pt care so you can understand why I get discouraged easily. thank you.
