Life in the ER

What is your favorite part :redbeathe and the worst part :banghead: of working in an ER?

I'd now like to add a hate.....I hate nonmedical posters making judgements they have no flippin clue about. I suspect my mechanic would look at me roll his eyes, and talk about what an idiot I am to his friends if I tried to put my two cents in on how he should do his job.....:banghead:

Specializes in ICU, ER.
I love my co-workers and the team work saving a life.

You will only find this type of relationship in the ER. My co-workers are my second family.

Just because someone uses a "non JCHAO" approved expression, does not mean they (a) aren't a health professional (b) aren't knowledgeable on a subject

BEST PART:

-Not having to call the MD on the phone, because they only standing a few feet away.

-The adrenaline rush!

WORST PART:

-Drug seekers!

-Scabies

-Sputum

Specializes in Med-Surg, ED.

  • Best: The turnover---no more taking care of the same heavy patient day after day after day...

  • Immediate orders
  • Autonomy
  • The team atmosphere--people who don't 'do' teamwork are weeded out pretty darn quick
  • The adrenaline of not knowing for sure just what is going to land on your assignment next
  • The docs are really close by
  • Being seen as a peer by the medical team

  • Worst:
  • The regulars who just simply don't follow up
  • The ones who die
  • Not knowing how a patient did once they leave the ED
  • First year residents and med students who haven't learned that nurses are their peers, not their handmaidens.
  • Freqeunt fliers who are coming in just for their fix and then get mad when we don't give it to them
  • Worried, hovering family members telling you how to do your job (try that vein honey, I can see it really well!)

I love it and wouldn't change it for the world, even if it means I have to deal with the worst stuff. I will always be an ER nurse!

Specializes in Emergency.

Southeastbends, you're kind of defensive....and I noticed you lack credentials as well. No one is asking for "JCHAO" approved anything. It's just that most nurses have learned throughout school and work to back their opinions with fact. Now relax, this is supposed to be a fun post for people to appreciate. I am so sick of feeling like an ED nurse always on the defense from potential attack! Dang!!

This isn't an attack. I will assume that text lacks inflection and therefore I may have taken the statement incorrectly. By the same token, certain comments can come off in way that seems rather condescending.
