License and Moral Character

Published

Hello!

I had a question. I am a nursing school student and today I was taught about the Moral Character part of the License. A couple years ago I was fired from my hospital system for opening a celebrities chart (I know this is really really bad) and I really didn't mean any harm and I know now how badly I messed up. In the character questions, this means I would have to answer yes. I'm not a bad person, I made one really bad mistake and I don't want it to ruin my career as a nurse. Does anyone have any experience with this? Has this happened to them? Should I stop nursing school here? I just want to know what people have had during this process. I see a lot of criminal histories but nothing really about being fired. Thanks so much!

That was a HIPAA violation. Not a criminal act. However, starting out in nursing could be difficult. Talk to your instructor and student advisor. I would keep on with my studies. When it's time to get a job.... leave this incident out.

hello!

I know, I'm so nervous. but do you think they will not issue me a license over it?

You are projecting too far into the future. Talk to your BON . Only they can answer your question.

HIPAA violations are crimes punishable by both fines and possible prison time

this is true, maybe they meant in my case. in what they sent me, they didn't say it was a hippa violation, they said I violated one of their policies, and then listed the policy.

I stand corrected. However.. I still think the OP should keep her head down and only discuss this with her student advisor.

thank you guys for commenting. I made such a dumb mistake a couple years ago and I hate that it's following me into my professional life. I definitely know better now and would never act that way again. I just hope the company and the licensing board both see that.

Since you were unlicensed at the time it's doubtful that the board even knows about this. You might not be eligible for rehire within that company but you will find your nitch. Just be prepared for how you would answer a question about it.
