LGBTQ Youth: Resources for Pediatric Nurses

Published

Pediatric nurses are key to facilitating improvements for the health and well-being of LGBTQ children and adolescents. In schools, at the hospital bedside, and other settings, they have opportunities to identify concerns, start conversations, and connect children and teens to support. Pediatric nurse practitioners during annual check-ups or other interactions can play a vital role in discussing issues in a safe environment. As faculty and clinical educators, nurses impact LGBTQ cultural competence.

Because pediatric nurses are uniquely positioned in a variety of settings to advocate, educate, and support youth and their families, the Institute of Pediatric Nursing, a committee of the non-profit Pediatric Nursing Certification Board, recommends the following respected resources about care for LGBTQ youth:

The resources that I would use for pediatric nurses would be the following:

1. Buying puppets in order to help children feel better.

2. Buy toys for children so that they have something to play with.

3. Buy some books and coloring books to read; especially on kid's health.

4. Buy some prizes and stickers for doing a good job.

Pediatric nurses can help the LGBT Youth Group by the following things:

1. The nurses can obtain resources by doing an internet search for the resources.

2. They could talk to other resources and do a networking session on certain types of resources.

3. They could talk to youth that are actually in the LGBT community and see what types of resources that they would like in a survey.

Here are some resources:

1. Puppets

2. Some stress balls for physical health

3. Counselors if needed

4. School health information.

Here are some resource ideas for pediatrics:

1. Go to the public library and get some pamphlets, books, or internet information.

2. Go to your local city government agency and ask them for some resources.

3. Call the pediatrician office and ask for resources.

I hope this helps you.

The resources for the youth in your community are the following things:

1. Going to the library is a good idea in order to find resources.

2. Getting books, magazines, or pamphlets on the subject is always a good idea.

3. Looking at the phone directory and gathering phone numbers of good agencies that can help is a good idea.
