Letter of resignation, personnel file, more, plz advise

Published

Hi, I have posted about this situation before: my first RN job at my place of employment (unit) I was an aide on for 3-4 years while in school, certain aides now direspecting me, one aide in particular 'going off' on me in an almost physically and threatening way, mgt non-responsive for the most part, me taking a weeks LOA, telling me she 'is an excellent aide', then me being intimidated, aide then complaied about ME, saying I wasn't 'communicating' and that this 'jeopardized pt safety'. We had a mtg which was like a Jerry Springer show (on the aides part) with stares/attitude looks at me from her, her being loud, and actually lying about me, and when I tried to defend myself, mgt saying 'thats her truth, and you have your truth'.??? I can't be secure in providing pt care with this going on!! Mgt just dosent get it.

I recently emailed my mgr to say that while appreciated her time and the intent of the meeting, and I would be the first to want to move forward, it did concern me that said aide staed for the most part inaccurate information.

I got the reply of the intent of the meeting 'to air things out' and move forward, ect.

So I did get a new job, because though I do love my old one, other than this part of it, I consider this part very dangerous, because this is my career, and having this aide around is detrimental, and it concerns me the lack of response by the mgt, and the mgt's lack of concern that this aide lies. I hope you understand. I work very hard, am very professional, and this is gutter-drama.

I also will miss the overtime on an almost daily basis, as we are too busy to chart during the shift, and daily spend an hour or two after shift ends to chart-- is this god or bad? (a float nurse to our unit says this unit is the worst, nowhere else does this occur) Maybe it would be better to give up that overtime to be able to leave on time...

Anyway, I need to send a letter of resignation. What should I state? I also want to clear up the confusion this aide mess has caused by HER drama, on MY career, what would the mgr have included in MY personnel file re: this, and how can I clear this up?

Thanks for your help.

P.S. If you can help with any of the above issues, please do! I must turn in this letter to give sufficient notice either today or tomorrow, so its also a time factor! thanks!

(I am so grateful to have this site for help)

"It is with regret that I am submitting my resignation from xxxx position at xxxx hospital, effective (your last day of work.)"

You may or may not give a thank you for the oppotunities you've had while there. Otherwise keep it short and neutral. You don't want to being up a lot of problems you had. Don't burn your bridges. You may never return there, but you never know when you'll be applying to a new position and find your old boss there.

I would just simpley state that I have accepted a job that meets my career goals that I have set and gives me experience in other areas of nursing that I am interested in.

Short sweet and to the point.

No need to drag this out any more!

Walk away, though it maybe hard to do.

You worked hard for your licenses and should not have to defend yourself for that.

Also I have found that "certain aides" always get their way, fact of healthcare!

Same thing happened to a friend of mine and she left and is much happier for it!

Good luck!

It is never necessary, and rarely helpful to state the reason for a resignation in a letter. I would recommend the following:

Dear Ms. Manager,

I submit my resignation from my position as Staff Nurse on Med-Surg Unit, effective October 1, 2008.

I would like to thank the staff and management of the unit for the opportunity to serve with them and provide care for our patients.

Sincerely,

Nancy Nurse

You don't "owe" anyone an explanation and besides, unless they are really dense, they already know why you are leaving. They have chosen not to address the problem in an effective manner. Nothing you say in a resignation letter will help to solve unit problems and will only serve to make you look bitter.

If you wish to address this issue, an exit interview is the place to do it, although I don't recommend wasting your time, effort or breath there either.

Thanks so much for your replies, I will keep the letter short and sweet, using your examples as templates.

About my personnel file, I wonder if any of this 'drama' has made it in there? If I wanted to seek employment at any point in the future with this hospital corporation, would they seek this file? I have no idea.

I did maintain professionalism at all times, and this aide just created drama to create confusion and deflect from herself, but since my mgr dosent really care about 'the truth', wonder what is in there??

wonder what is in there??

probably nothing

While it sounds like the manager wasn't listening to your "truth" about what happened, it is reality that each of us perceives situations differently. How you perceive a situation is different than how another person may.

Hi Corgimom, yes, we all perceive situations differnetly, however there is deliberate misrepresentation. There are facts, such as I was standing right there vs. i was way down the hall, that type of thing is not differing perception based, and if I am wrong (using this example) please tell me how those two things can be a matter of 'perception'.

You won't know what made it into the file unless something comes up. Better not to push things, just resign quietly and leave.

If something does make it into the file and the facility actually gives this info to a prospective employer, it will look better on you if you didn't try to fight it and "get the last word" on this. You won't win. Trust me on this one.

Chances are the facility does not have the nerve to put personal info like this into a phone call verifying employment - Stuff like this is usually kept quiet unless you live in TX and have worked for a hospital that subscribes to services like Group 1.

And before everyone asks what Group 1 is....do a search on the site and you will find a ton of info on it.
