Lecture notes/recording ?s

Hi all! I've applied for the NYU FNP program, hopefully to start in May(!). It's been a LONG time since I've been in school and am wondering about how people generally take notes and/or record lectures. I'm imagining bringing my laptop for note-taking - is this the norm these days? And/or can I just record the lecture with my phone? I have an iPhone and from a quick google it seems like long voice memos can be recorded but there are sometimes snafus with playback - any app recommendations to avoid problems?

This is my first post here, hopefully I'm doing this right :)

Thanks!

I believe you have to ask the professor's permission before you can record their lecture.

Ask the instructor for permission first. Recommend you look into getting a Livescribe Smartpen. Well worth the small investment. www.livescribe.com

I'm currently in nursing school. Most professors allow recording of lecture, I have no problems with using my iPhone, play back is fine. For note taking, I bring my laptop and also use basic paper and pen. Laptop comes in handy for pulling up different sources throughout lecture to follow along with or clarify, and of course for quickly typing notes.

thanks all for your input. i did a little more googling and saw circus ponies notebook, which seems interesting.

good point about needing permission - although i would think it's such a frequent request that professors might address it at the outset of class?

the live scribe looks really interesting but i'm a far better, faster, and more comfortable w typing which is why i wouldn't want to take notes on paper :)

I used my ITouch to record all my nursing school lectures. I had to get a microphone attachment ($5 on ebay) but I hear the IPhone doesn't need it. I used the ITalk app. The "lite" version is free and I never needed to upgrade. It did a great job recording super long lectures. I'd highly recommend it. I will totally be using it again (with permission) when grad school starts.

Here's the tip from me. I am graduating this May...yahooooooooo

1) Do the assigned textbook reading before class.

2) When in class, just listen to the lecture...ask question that is not clear from reading or the lecture portion contradicting textbook etc.

3) Don't worry about taking notes in class. Try to understand in the class rather than taking notes what you need to know. If you must, a simple yellow writing pad & a pen is enough. No high gadgets needed to take notes.

4) I would buy Leik's FNP intensive review, Fitzgerald 3rd edition review and Hollier review book now. Don't wait until you graduate.

5) After your lecture, go over the review book, i.e. portion covered in class. All the needed notes voila are right there.

6) Pay special attention to A&P while reading textbook...cause that will haunt you once you start clinicals.

8) There are some apps for smart phones: epocrates, diagnosaurus are very helpful.

Thank you so much!!! I am not sure I can be converted to not taking notes :) But! I already bought the Leik review and am going to try to get the other two as well. And i just downloaded epocrates and diagnosaurus. Thanks!

Finishing PNP program in June (YAY). What worked for me was to print the powerpoint slides, sometimes in note view to save ink and then take notes alongside the corresponding slide. I have also brought along my laptop and used it for note taking. Like you, I'm much faster at typing, however, it's so heavy and a nuisance that I quit. GL!
