on leave due to stress

hello there can some one tell me if i can resign from work while on leave due to stress. the only cure/treatment for my stress right now is not to see my boss.

i tried to look for a new job, but they keep on asking about my employer. what do i have to say whenever they ask me again? it is very hard to find a nursing job right now and they always ask for reference, and I don't want to tell them that I am not in good terms with management right now. what should i do?
