Lead apron question

Published

Does anyone know approximately how much the lead aprons you wear actually weigh?
Looking to apply for an IR/CCL position in the near future. I'm used to pushing and pulling, but not carrying a lot of weight. Was considering getting a weighted vest to prepare for the lead aprons, and was wondering how much to shoot for.

 Thanks!

It depends.  Just a front apron, at the recommended/required 0.5mm lead thickness, might be 6-8 lb.  A wrap-around might be 10-12 lb, or more.  Add one lb for thyroid shield, and possibly a bit more if you wear eye goggles.

Older "models" might be heavier.  But each facility should perform an annual exam of the lead aprons used, and remove those from service that are cracked or inefficient protection.  New aprons should be purchased periodically, for employee safety.
