lazy cnas

Published

Im a new lvn and im havin trouble being a charge nurse.im sick and tired of the lazy cnas ive had.one cna even told me when i asked a patient be changed that he had to pass drinks...man was i furious!!!how should i have handled that situation?should i have written him up???im crushed i love all my patients and i like my job but im just tired of the crap in ltc.of the pts not gettin the care they deserve...im possibly considering leaving the field..idk i just feel horrible.sorry about the vent.tired of adm demanding we get 1 hr lunches when that is hard to do.tired so tired.any advice??:crying2:

maybe your CNA was so overwhelmed they just felt like they needed to finish a task they had started in order to feel like they accomplished *something.*

From a CNA's perspective: What are we...children? If I am passing out drinks and someone needs toileting/pericare, I stop what I'm doing and tend to that person. Checking to make sure everyone has something to drink is something that should be done every time we enter or before we exit a resident's room("we" means everyone on the healthcare team). So many things can happen on a shift in an instant and by waiting to pass out drinks to everyone at a certain time is not practical. Work smarter, not harder. Providing healthcare is about the resident's/patient's feelings and needs not ours (whether "we" are doctors, nurses, therapists, cna's, housekeeping, dietary, administration, (a)don...).

The bottom line is this...we all have our job description and the opportunity to return higher our education to change our titles if we don't like what our current job requires. I was a CNA...felt unappreciated & overworked so I went to school and became an LVN. As an LVN I felt undervalued and disregarded at times so I went back to school and gt my BSN. The medical profession has increasingly become an overwhelming entity over the years, we're ALL swaped in our daily tasks. Nurses are busy, CNAs are busy..but I'll say what I'm sure we've all heard many many times....I can do YOUR job, but you can't do MINE. So I need a CNA who understands that a eventhough you're in the middle of making a bed...when another pt. needs help to the bathroom, that bed CAN and SHOULD wait. I truly believe ion teamwork but some CNAs will take advantage and do less...That has been my experience.

if, god-forbid, my mother were left to lay in a pool of urine and feces for a longer than reasonable time, i would ask the don why he/she doesn't staff his/her facility appropriately.

have u ever worked in ltc????hardly is any facility ever staffed appropriately...u just gotta make do with what u have.

i think the problem is im a fairly new nurse so they probably just try and see what they can get away with since they think i wont know any better.

Coming from another CNA point of view, did your CNA simply say " hold on a sec so i can finish giving the patients there drinks?" Or " I am too busy I will do it later" there is a huge difference. Drinks take less than 5 mins depending on how many patients we have. Give him a break, Unless he is one of the quote " lazy ones" I have worked with many lazy ones and many lazy nurses as well that just want to sit around. We do have many great cnas along with great loving nurses at our hospital, but you will always run into the lazy one. In that case you need to first adress it with him/her and if it should happen again go to whoever is above you and address it firmly there.

Just about any time you have lazy CNAs in a facility the root cause of the problem is incompetent management. The only solution I could come up with was to leave LTC. I'll go back if I have to, but I really really hope I don't.

Work smarter, not harder.

HA! There it is again, that corporate phrase that means, "just shut the hell up and do what you're told, I don't care how".

:lol2:

Yes, in fact I am a CNA in an LTC and I resent your brash generalizations.

It's interesting to me that a CNA can work hard from the start of their shift, to the end of their shift vitually non-stop and still be called 'lazy' by some dullard nurse or administrator. At least try to be original.

My point, which is seemingly lost on this thread is that instead of droning on about the supposed laziness of CNA's, perhaps we ought to examine the culture and structure of LTC's.

i agree with ur post but i stay for the residents all for them

I think it's evident that you are prone to calling CNA's lazy. You don't even know me and you called me one. Pathetic really.

Seriously lets not argue we all can admit that there are lazy people in the job place PERIOD regardless of title. I have had cna's ignore call lights and not turn patients when I am extremely busy and overwhelmed (i worked on a stepdown unit for awhile) Instead they are socializing or complaining but I have also known nurses who sit at the nurses station playing on facebook and expecting others to do all their work. and leaving all the turns to cna's or other nurses. We have to work as a team in order to get the best patient care. However there is a heirachy because I am the one who has a license and am untimately responsible for the safety and well being of my pt. I have never delegated a task that I am not willing or have not done myself but when I do delegate its because I am not able to do it at the moment and it needs to be done. We all need to learn to work to work together and stop bickering like we are in highschool because ultimately it is the patient who suffers...and I am just not ok with that/

Off my soapbox now :)
