its no different than doing med/surg. know what is normal; where things go wrong becomes a disease and that becomes the focus of treatment. there are specific illnesses that kids and psych patients get that you will focus on. kids, in particular, can't articulate their symptoms very well so their behavior must be interpreted. therefore, you must know what the normal behavior for a child is for their age level. in the pediatric links i listed below you will find plenty of that information. people who are in the icu have problems that you will not see in the patients on the regular med/surg units such as respiratory failure, shock, renal failure, sepsis and multisystem failure (http://www.ccmtutorials.com/). if you look on the sticky threads in the nursing student assistance forum you will find help with these subject areas.
for icu, see
for peds, see web links on https://allnurses.com/forums/f205/medical-disease-information-treatment-procedures-test-reference-websites-258109.html - medical disease information/treatment/procedures/test reference websites. you can also look up the psych diseases/conditions on some of the references listed there, particularly the merck manual. some nice pediatric assessment forms and links can be found on posts 33, 44 (a video) and 45 on this sticky in the nursing student assistance forum: https://allnurses.com/nursing-student-assistance/health-assessment-resources-145091.html - health assessment resources, techniques, and forms
for psych care plans, use this help site:
http://www.fadavis.com/townsend4e/additionalnursingcareplans.asp. there is a psychosocial assessment weblink on post #34 of the same health assessment resources, techniques, and forms thread (https://allnurses.com/nursing-student-assistance/health-assessment-resources-145091.html).
good luck with your last semester of school. you can always ask questions on the forum if you get stuck over something.
