Lap Tops at Ivy Tech?

Published

For Ivy Tech students, I was wondering if many of you or students in your classes use lap tops in class (to take notes)? I am thinking of buying one as I'm beginning my pre-reqs in the Fall (at Lawrence campus). I just don't want to be the only one in class taking notes on a computer because it will probably annoy everyone :) Anyway feedback and advice would be much appreciated! Thanks.

I am a nursing student and there were several students who used laptops in lecture classes. There were also some who recorded the lectures as well. You won't annoy anyone and the teachers don't mind at all as long as you are using your computer to take notes and not playing games! It is a great idea and you won't be the only one using a laptop. Plus, it is nice to have it to use in the lounge on breaks between classes, to get on the internet to look up things, check grades, etc.

:D

Thanks! I will get to shopping then! :)

I think laptops are an excellent idea! My hand will cramp writing for three hours of lecture but you can do short hand for notes!

Good idea there!

Brenda!

Question for ya:

Does Ivy Tech/financial aid request certain authorization for more funds to be added to your total FA if you want to buy a laptop for school use??

My amount will cover books, tuition and a little left over but not enough for a laptop.

Ideas?

I thought I saw someone else mention this in another thread but I'm not sure. I'd like more information on this, too.

I phoned Ivy Tech book store this am and they said to look on the main page on Ivy Tech. Check the A-Z tab and then enter Dell. It will take you to their webpage.

It was disappointed...............Dell only offer a 12% discount and the cheapest that I could find was almost 800.00. They had others without a cd drive or any bells/whistles. :(

That's not much of a cut. But I guess a little is better than none.

I thought the email I got said you could get them for around $400 but that might be for a desktop.

I'm glad you asked about laptops in class. I'm attending both the Lawrence and NM campus this summer and I do better typing notes than writing them.

FYI, this past semester when I was taking microcomputers I was constantly running to Staples to update Powerpoint, Windows, etc. Cost me $500! After, my db told me (he works IT) that Ball State offers a BIG discount on programs for students. He's an alumni so I don't know if you have to be a student there or have graduated from there. I'll ask. He said he upgraded for about $20.

I saw that, too. The discount is pretty puny. I thought that someone else had written about being able to get additional financial aid specifically for a laptop purchase. I will try to call financial aid office this afternoon and see what I can find out. I'll post again with any answers.

Now that I think about it, I could almost promise that a coworker bought hers with additional FA.

Just a thought, there is a computer store in westfield that sells used laptops. I don't know what their selection is but, I have seen them advertise that they have laptops. The ad states that they start out at $349. It did name a couple of different brands that they have..

I bought my laptop at Walmart last spring. It's an Acer with a disc burner, and I paid $499. It has plenty of memory and a wireless card already installed so that I can take the internet with me if I want to.

Hope this helps.
