Hello spawnupe:
Yes, you are correct. On USAREC Form 1205 in regards to the GCSP (Generic Course Selection Program): If you request and are assigned to Alaska, Korea, or Germany your selection of the GCSP becomes null and void. Courses that are part of the GSCP: critical care nurse course, perioperative nursing course, maternal-child health nursing course and the psych nursing course
In addition: Once you have been selected and complete/graduate from one of the courses, you will incur a one year ADSO (active duty service obligation)
Perhaps you could go to one of the courses as TDY En route (to Germany) after your first year post-grad?

So this means that I will be a med surge nurse for three years, right? Is there a way to get trained as a critical care nurse later?
Nope, doesn't mean you will be a med-surg nurse for three years (although, nothing wrong with that!) Once you do your initial year as a brand spanking new RN, get some experience, maintain your physical fitness (pass your biannual APFT) you can request to go to one of the generic courses that are offered at WRAMC, BAMC, MAMC. All depends upon the needs of the Army and the available $$ for FY2010.
Have you talked to your Health Care Recruiter about your wanting to go to one of the courses (GCSP)?

Is this regarding just reserves or active duty as well?

Hello all nurses fam! I have been informed that if you select Landstuhl as your first assignment(new grad) that you will have to waive the guaranteed course. Is that true? Also, will you be able to get the course in your next duty assignment? Is there any consideration for that? Thoughts are welcomed
