Lakeview Colllege of Nursing?

Published

Any advice or information would be helpful. If there is anyone that is in this program or knows anyone that is in this program, is it a good school? I have heard some mixed reviews, but I want to know how the current students feel about this program. Was it difficult to get in, what is the lowest gpa that anyone has gotten in with? Are the teachers helpful? Anything would be greatly appreciated! GREATLY:up:

Thank you in advance

I did not go to that College but live in the same town it's in and can speak a little to the reputation as viewed by nurses in the community. AND this is ONLY my opinion. The clinical experience you will receive at that school is somewhat lacking. I work in a facilty that frequently has Lakeview students and it is so distressing to hear that they cant/wont do something as simple as a central line dressing change, EVEN with SUPERVISION by nursing staff or their instructor. Many never even learn to put a foley in while in school, "That will be taught when you get INTO the profession." Most come out of school with a very skewed idea of what nursing is and find it to be a real eye opener and quite an adjustment. I also know an instructor there and when this instructor is on the unit with the students, they are usually seen "holding up the wall" if you know what I mean.

Although a BSN is a wonderful thing, I highly recommend entering an associate's degree program to fully attain a higher level of clinical expertise. This affords the opportunity to get the clinical experience, enter the nursing profession and find an employer willing to pay for your RN-BSN program.

Not meant to offend ANY Lakeview grads/students/faculty.

I agree....I also live and work in the same town and see a big difference in nurses that have a BSN or ADN. A BSN program is more buisness than clinical type nursing. You will learn a lot more nursing hands on stuff in an ADN program, if that is what you are wanting. Not to mention, from what I hear, the NCLEX is more of a clinical nursing exam.

You both are right. My long term goal is to be MSN-NP. I know there are many programs that have RN-MSN-NP. With RN I can finish faster and start gaining the experience. Thank you! Both of you have been very helpful!!

I graduated from Lakeview in December 2006 and I know someone who is currently attending the program. For me, the clinical experience was what you made it---there are plenty of students who "hold up the wall", but if you wanted to learn and sought out those experiences, it was very worthwhile. Now, my friend tells me that they are really upping the requirements for ATI in order to increase the NCLEX pass rate. There were some wonderful instructors that I have gotten recommendations from for grad school (keep in mind I attended Lakeview on the EIU campus...I don't know too much about the Danville campus). I enjoyed my experience and made sure to complete all activities on my "check-off booklet" before graduation--other students complained about not getting to do enough, but they were the ones who didn't get their butts in gear and make it happen! If you go in with a can-do attitude, it will happen for you and after graduation you will be much more prepared---best of luck!
