I have a question regarding the GPA calculation. I'm thinking about taking a class like calculus right now because I may need it in the future. Will grades outside of the nursing program's key curriculum be calculated in my GPA for candidacy? Or is it ONLY the key courses plus required classes that are factored? Because I don't think it would be fair for the grades in non-required classes to be factored in.

The class that isn't required will be calculated to your GPA. It's not right but that's how they do it. I didn't know you will need that class down in the future. Only math is required is statistics.

LaGuardia's requirements has changed and you have to also take TEAS exam to get in the program also.

It depends on the program you are applying to. For LPN they count ONLY Key courses but for RN they count everything once and Key courses TWiCE. So if you are going for RN do your best to get A's at everything. Plus now (starting Spring 2013) they have TEAS, you need to score 58.7 or so to be eligible to apply for RN program. For LPN I guess it 41 points or something around that.

Why does it say that community health and statistics are pre reqs? They are not. They're key courses which you can take either before or after applying to the program. Also, the TEAS 5 exam is a requirement now, you must take that exam before you can apply for candidacy.

For those who have gotten in, what was your GPA? Do they look at overall GPA or just for the 4 pre-req classes? Thanks!

Community health and statistics are general education courses not key courses. You can take them after getting into the program but it is highly not recommended. Nursing courses are going to occupy all your time so don't risk the chance of failing. For the Rn program, they use the key course gpa and the required general education courses gpa.

Hi everyone, just to let everybody get an idea of what GPA to obtain in order to get into the LPN program, I'll share my GPA. I got accepted into the program starting this fall with a total average GPA of 3.4 from the pre-req classes: Eng 101-A, SSY 101-B+, MAT 106-A, SCB 203-C+ (just a reminder that a C+ won't kill you;)), SCB 204-B+, SSY 240-A. In addition, SCB 204 and SSY 240 can be taken during your clinical phase (so it does/doesn't count as a pre-req) and you only need to obtain a C in order to stay in the program or else you will be kicked out. Fortunately I took all of these classes before starting the clinical phase :), which will probably make it easier to focus more on the nursing classes. Well, good luck to all of you who applied to the program.

I know the clinical phase starts in September and I am too late to enroll know, but can I do the pre clinical ( pre req) this spring to get the ball rolling? Or do I have to wait until September 2014 to get started?

Yes you can start your prerequisite now. Aim for all A's and finish as many as you can before you apply it's best to take them before entering the program so you don't have a heavy course load once starting the program
