I started pediatric home health in Los Angeles in Nov. I like the job but right my agency seems to have a shortage of hours for me. In fact right now I'm not on a case at all but them seem to still be advertising on craigslist for more nurses. Is this normal for this time of year?
Love private duty and have been with one agency for last 2 years. I work in the San Fernando Valley and the agency I work with is always looking for LVNs. They do not have a group of LVNs who are on call. Thus, the client does without a nurse if a nurse calls in sick.
I am on the LVN-BSN track through Indiana State Univ/Sanoma State. Checked out the other agencies that the Board of nursing suggested. This program sounds like the best for me, as I do work. Oklahoma in Burbank requires you to go to their site for lectures..Indiana State is distant learning with procored exams, and clinicals at an area hospital in our area. The cheapest way to get RN degree is to do the AA degree from the beginning. If you don't, it is hard to do the LVN to AA RN because there are so little openings and many colleges don't know the type of education an LVN received--they are hesitant to take LVNs into their program. But, if time and work is a problem, like it is for me, the distant learning program is good.
I have applied for MSMC I figured I can work around the class schedule and they allow you to do your prerequisites there before moving onto the nursing program. It's not cheap however. You take a test to get credit for your LVN education so I guess for them that clears up how "good" your LVN education was.
I went to the Mt. St Mary's orietation last year, but would have to take 2 more classes. Then mom got sick.
With Ind State, you have to challenge 4 classes (psych, adult med, family, maternity)..only on line NCLEX like quesitons whose questions are proctored by a proctor that you arrange. T
he Okhahoma state program was $34k, Indiana State once you get admitted and have all your nursing prerequisites and pass the 4 challenge courses (cost abour $300-400 each) is about $20k. If one has to take other pre requisite courses, then you can take at community college or through The College Network--they are also distant learning.
Chose ISU because of time problem over MSM program. When I was doing ADN clinicals at hospital in Redondo Beach, ran across a student from MSMU on med/surg.
Best to you in your endeavors
There is discussion that it is now more difficult to get RN nursing jobs...what have you heard about RN jobs out in CA?

I was going to post an update on my situation earlier in the week but I guess now will do. To the poster who suggested taking a weekend case she was absolutely right. Last week they asked me to take over the M-F days shifts. The only downside is I have to work 7 days in a row. I just finished day 6 of 7 now.
