Labor Medications

Published

Hi! I am working on an assignment for my OB class.

We are to find the following information for the drugs ambien, demerol, phenergan and a couple more opiods:

  • Stage of labor it is administered
  • Side effects to mom and baby/fetus

My question is what would be a good resource to use for this? I have looked on ATI and in the Davis Drug Guide (13e) and I can find a lot of information, but nothing specific for laboring patients. Most specifically I am having a hard time finding information on stage of labor. Any resources you can direct me to?

The Maternity & Women's Health Care text book is really good. I think its written by Lowdermilk? WebMD also has some good information if you don't want to buy any more books. Labor Stages and Baby Delivery: What's Normal

Specializes in Pedi.

Check your maternity textbook... although I cannot imagine a situation where you would administer ambien to a laboring woman.

Specializes in Critical Care, ED, Cath lab, CTPAC,Trauma.

It is in reference to OB and not necessarily women. The ambien could be post partum.....I am NOT a OB nurse...so I know VERY Little about this area.......but this site may help....Drug Search page: calcium, blood pressure medications, thyroid, diet aids, antidepressants, pain medications

Specializes in Pediatrics, High-Risk L&D, Antepartum, L.

It can be great for use when early in an induction or really early labor with minimal progress.
