Labor Leader Silent on Union-Busting in Ohio Hospitals

Published

It is particularly troubling that President John Sweeney has only now issued a statement about the growing tension between CNA and SEIU. While Sweeney is quick to accuse the SEIU of wrongdoing at the recent Labor Notes conference, where was his public statement condemning the grotesque behavior of CNA in Ohio?

Unlike the Labor Notes gathering where the facts remain highly disputed, CNA actions in Ohio are without disagreement or debate. There is no question that their union-busting actions prevented as many of 8,000 nurses and other healthcare workers from getting a voice on job! That remains the true injustice and has yet to prompt a public condemnation from President Sweeney and the AFL-CIO. It is ridiculous to suggest that the CNA leadership and their gangs are the victims in this battle. If an apology is due, it must come from Rose Ann DeMoro and the CNA to the thousands of workers that have been silenced by these repulsive union-busting campaigns.

The California unit did not assist us with Ohio. If I am not mistaken I believe we read about the election in the newspaper. There is a rift within SEIU and it is about the similar issues as the CNA/NNOC & SEIU dispute.

I would follow these discussions carefully if I were a member of SEIU. Check their websites and see what they are saying. Just so you have both sides of the story.

I can understand that you may have difficulty seeing the other side of SEIU especially when your personal experience has been so positive. No one is saying that SEIU has done nothing for workers.

The question is are Andy Stern's methods good or bad for workers. Many outside of CHW and CNA/NNOC who are discussing his methods. Be sure to get their perspectives too.

I believe on the local and individaul level we agree about the important things. Hopefully, there is a way to work around our differences and achieve those goals. After all, we are practically neighbors!

Here is what I find to be an objective blog about the theoretical difference between SEIU and NNOC. As I said there are many who are talking about the organizing differences as they pertain to the entire labor movement.

Be sure to read the link on this blog about the importance of union density.

Agree with the previous post that the SEIU/NNOC dispute has sparked many discussions in the labor movement concerning broader issues and principles.

Here's a link to a blog which I favor. I feel the author is more objective and like the focus on empowerment of the rank and file.

Read all the way through to her responses on the comments to the blog on the second link.
