Labor and Drlivery RN in CA, thinking to relocate to Texas

Hi there,

I have a question. I am a labor and delivery RN with 9 years experience. I live in San Diego with my family. We are making good money, but cost of living is so expensive...rent is a lot and we can not afford to buy a house here.... SO expensive!!! I am thinking to move to San Antonio, houses are cheaper there, my daughter wants to have chickens and I love to garden.

How much RN's make over there? And what is patient:nurse ratio? Is it worth it to make the move?

And how are hospitals and schools.... Good?

thank you, Lana

I am thinking the same thing! I am so sick of high cost of living, heavy traffic, and so many people everywhere!

I don't want to disappoint you but my niece had not so good experience in TX.

My niece who is doctor moved to Austin, TX for the exact same reasons as I have now but came back only one yer later... She said everything is cheap but so does her pay... One nurse takes care of more patients (like 1 to 6 ratio), so nurses are very busy and not able to provide good care to each patient. Although Austin is not so conservative compared to other cities in TX, she had some situations that made her very uncomfortable for being a minority race. Summer is so hot that she sweated a lot just from standing outside.

Now, I am thinking to move to somewhere quieter but not TX, like... TN? Hmm...

There are some good things about San Antonio, but I find it depressing overall. If if really bad parenting and dogs chained up in 105 degree heat with no shelter don't bother you, it might be the right fit.
