L&d/nicu departments common?

Published

Hello:) I am a nursing student currently in MA and I am very interested in labor and delivery and also working in the nicu. I have seen some posts about people having jobs in a l&d/nicu department and I was just wondering if it is common for hospitals to combin these two departments because I have never heard of that! Also do they hire nurses for just l&d and just nicu or do they work both?

thanks!

smaller hospitals have nurses that work L&D and cross train in Level II NICU. Bigger hospitals and Children's hospitals have nurses that work exclusively NICU or exclusively L&D

Specializes in L&D/Maternity nursing.

My hospital has LDRP and our SCN (level II NICU) all on the same unit. I currently do LDRP but am starting training to the SCN as well. About half our nurses do both.

Specializes in L&D.

You can also do both, just not at the same time!

I worked L&D for 3 years.

Now I'm interviewing for a NICU job because I'm also interested in both.

It's a level IV NICU.

If I get the job I may just concentrate on NICU for awhile.

Perhaps I'll stay PRN in L&D.

That way I can do both :)
