Kwantlen Nursing Admissions

Published

Hi! I just wanted to get some insight into Kwantlen's nursing program. I'm thinking of applying for the Sept intake next year. I'm currently at UBC taking applied biology but I feel dissatisfied with my academics and I guess I'm not entirely comfortable with 300+ people in lectures and the immense competition there... I know that if we have under 24 credits, the admissions will only look at our high school transcript. So, does anyone know the average admission average to get in? How's the program at Kwantlen?

Here's the situation, I'm thinking of going from applied biology to nursing. I'm currently at UBC taking applied biology. I've always liked taking care of animals and people. I was thinking of going into health sciences or animal sciences. I was nearly dead-set on becoming a veterinarian until I realized my chances were quite grim (one vet school in all of western Canada that had 20 spots for BC residents...and 200 applicants) and the competition was extremely severe.

I also had a lot of personal matters that I went through this year. My sister was diagnosed with an eating disorder this year and had to spend a month in the ED unit at the hospital. Luckily she's an outpatient and on her way to recovery. During these times, I had numerous trips to the hospital, and I often saw many ED patients like her at the unit. There was a small interest growing behind my head, like how I wanted to go and help others like my sister. I know I haven't shadowed a nurse or volunteered at the hospital, but I hopefully plan to do so. I'm not sure what it's like yet to be a nurse however, I'm sure it's a rewarding process.

I just wanted to bump my post! I hope someone can offer me some advice! :)

kwantlen's nursing program entry is based entirely on GPA. They admit 32 students per intake (sept and Jan). 16 students get chosen from highschool with the highest grades based on the pre-reqs and for post-secondary students the highest 16 students are selected based on their GPA (from the most recent 24 credits)....soo unless you have a gpa that is over 3.5 i wouldnt even bother applying since they only accept 16 students and last year for the jan 2012 intake they had over 300 applicants...I would look into the other BC schools that offer nursing.

@arc10

Thanks for the info :) I'm guessing since I have less than 24 credits, I'll be under the HS category....I'll phone them to make sure then. I checked my pre-reqs (Eng 12, Bio 12, Chem 11 and Math 11), I have around a 3.9 GPA (94.75~round to 95%). Do you think that might be competitive enough? I guess there's also the BPN program for Kwantlen. I'm definitely looking into other schools too (UFV, VCC..) though I know UBC nursing and BCIT are probably off my list for now.
