Knowledge of English as CNA

I'm considering taking a CNA course, but my English is a little bit poor. I've been here for 1 year, so I've been trying to cram it into my brain, but it's tough. Before I came here, I had worked in a medical field, so I'm familiar with lots of med definitions. How strong should be my English for this position? I'd appreciate any advice.

GO,Take a CNA class.If you work as a CNA you can improve your English fast. The same to me.When I came here in few year ago. Everything's hard to me. First year I took CNA class then I worked in subacute floor, a nursinghome. then I work in hospital. I am preparing for NCLEX-RN test now. My everything is going well. But my big problem is still in English.I have to study and work hard!

It is never too old to learn!!

Thanks for encouraging. I've almost done level 7 of ESL's course, but I wish my English would be better. I strive to work hard to improve it. And I completely agree with you about last sentence.

People should be able to understand you and you should be able to understand them. If you can get across the concepts that you need to get across and understand the questions being asked of you- IMO you'll do fine. :) If you have a strong accent, I'd try to work on minimizing it (I'd say that for anyone- even if english is their primary language). It's not anything personal or against accents- just that in the medical field especially people need to be able to understand their caregivers and caregivers need to be able to understand their patients.

Definately take the class! :) Language is just another skill- and if you're learning the medical skills, you can be working on improving the language skills as/if needed. You'll do great! :)

If you think your English skills are the biggest problem, than work on it a bit more.

I moved to the US 4 years ago and went to CC where I was placed at ESL 3 and since than I took English classes like crazy:D... the next semester I am going to take English 101 which makes me happy and scared at the same time, but I keep telling myself that I can do it if I work EXTRA hard on it. So... just don't give up on ESL or other English classes because not only it will help you in your everyday life but it will also boost your confidence, and will make YOU feel more comfortable around people.

As long as you can understand others and they can understand you, I wouldn't be too worried.

From your posts I wouldn't have guessed English is your second language.
