Hi all,
I don't know if this fits in here but I am a new nurse. My anxiety has always been heightend in me for some reason and it will sneak up on me without a warning. I was recently suspened without pay b/c my supervisor thought I was not taking care of my patients safely. I guess I could use the old excuse I was overworked, switching from nights to days is hard, but it is hard for me sometimes. I guess what triggered my anxiety to increase more was having a pt who was dying from liver cancer and it brought back memories of my mom. i knew i would have to deal with this one day, but i guess it hit me harder than i thought it would. Ever since then i guess i have been just going down hill so to speak. So when i got the news about the suspension it was hard to hear but after sulking for a day, i realized that my anxiety had taken over my life. i know i can be a better nurse and hopefully i can learn from this lesson that i need to ask for help . can i recover from this? i am afraid all of the hard work i put into being a nurse will go away.

I also suffer from anxiety and have found that therapy alone helps, but doesn't do it all. I am on medication for it that makes it possible for me to function.
I would talk to your PCP about this yesterday, belindalou. And good luck.

Hi Belindalou,
As a new nurse you may run into new situations which can trigger anxiety
and perhaps panic feelings. The truth is, this can happen throughout
your career at times as you met new circumstances. Often, you can
deal with the experience and move on. If you find the feelings are affecting
your job, then I support the suggestion above to talk with your PCP.
Your doctor may suggest some short term counseling to address the
issues of your Mom. It can help you personally and professionally to
review these feelings now and not let it continue to grow out of control.
Your employer need not have to know about the fact that you have
chosen counseling if you choose to do so.
Having a plan when you feel you are stressed, will help you manage
the events more successfully.
Very sorry about your Mom, know that in her memory you will soon find
strength . Your nursing practice will include comforting both the patient
and family in difficult and challenging circumstances.
Hugs to you, all the best..
