kind of a silly question

I will be starting my GN job in peds later on this month and I am absolutely excited. Although I have a pretty silly question for the seasoned peds nurses out there--

do you all recommend getting caught up on disney movies, reading children's books, etc since i haven't really been exposed to much kiddo stuff the past few years (my boyfriend and I went to Disney for a day and were a little behind the times as far as the newer attractions go-- Monsters Inc., Lilo and Stitch, etc.)?? I feel a little bit that if I didn't, I'd be a hypocrite wearing these fun scrubs and designs but not having anything to say about it.

Kind of a silly question, I know... but I want to be the best I can be for these kids-- and my detail oriented mindset is taking over a little.

Just wanted to know what you thought! Thanks a bunch!

I can tell you that I know most of the kiddy movies out there, and I know the Harry Potter series of books, but no others.

Most of my scrub tops are precious moments, winnie the pooh, etc. I stay away from the sponge bob ones though ( I just dont think the newer cartoons are good these days).

As long as you can relate to the child, you'll do fine. Besides, if they ask you if you have ever seen CARS, you can say "No, I havent, but tell me about your favorite part of the movie". You'll learn a lot about movies this way!

Good luck with your new job!!

I will also be starting in Peds in June and I got a great advise from one of the nurses. She told me that the biggest ice breaker was her Ultrascope pediatric stethoscope. It has a design of a cat and a dog on it and it is bright pink. She said that the children loose the fear when she lets them play with it. I told my husband I want one as a graduation present.

That's a HUGE relief! I actually just bought myself one last week I'm waiting for it to be delivered-- it's got grass, a caterpillar, a butterfly, and a ladybug on it. How funny, because I thought that would be a good thing to have too, something interesting (and something I can see a mile away so it doesn't get left behind or stolen....)

EMILY...they also sell scrubs that us "old" people will remember, and that kids today know all too well...like Scooby Doo and others. Shop around at different places online - you're bound to find some.

I agree with Meghan...if you can relate to the child you'll be fine, just make sure to do it ON THEIR LEVEL. Don't tower over them - kids fear that.
