Keeping babies safe from falls

My daughter, age 13 months, recently started pulling herself to a standing position. Problem is she "forgets" she's holding on and then falls backwards, banging her head. Is this dangerous? What can I do to keep her safe?

I still shudder when I think of the "thunk" a toddler's head makes when it hits the floor. Luckily, the short distance to the floor from standing generally isn't far enough to cause injury beyond bumps or bruises in a normal child.

If you ever have any question about whether or not a fall has caused an injury, call your pediatrician.

Safety wise the things to watch out for are unpadded edges they might hit on the way down; fire places, cross supports on chairs & other furniture, etc. And remember to use nonskid socks or slippers.

My sister kept a play mat nearby so when my nephew did fall he hit something soft.

hi,

boy do i remember those days. unfortunately kids are gonna fall. the best thing that you can do is "fall proof" the area. get rid of sharp edges, and try to make things as safe as possible (i got rid of my coffee table when my oldest son was a baby - he is now 15- and i still don't have it back:lol2: :lol2: :lol2: ). keep your little darlin' safe!!
