Kaplan College ADN - San Diego, Spring 2014

Published

Hello Everyone,

Just wondering if there are any students starting the ADN program at Kaplan in San Diego this coming January 2014. Hope to hear from some of you soon!

NurseMorse,

Are you a current ADN student?

When did you turn in your application? I just took my KTP and I got a 93% in Math and a 95% in Reading. I already have a bachelors degree. I am just waiting to hear if I got in now. Of course I'm curious to see how everyone else did on their exams. I didn't do that great on my SLE...I got a 26.

Great scores and with a previous bachelors, I have no doubt you will get in.

May I ask if your bachelors is in a health related field? And do you have medical experience?

Feel free to private message me with questions you may have about the campus.

My Bachelors was in Political Science. I don't have any previous medical experience, but I figured I would be ok since my scores were in the mid to high 90s and I have the degree. Thoughts? How are the nursing classes? I was in the pre-nursing program at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas (i recently married and moved here), and the teachers were NOT willing to help you at all. Sink-or-swim. I managed to get all A's in my Biology and Chem classes. I heard of some people getting turned away because they had all their prereqs completed, which meant less money for Kaplan. I'm not sure how correct that is, but it still worries me.

Hey Tmonteverdi,

I agree with Nurse Morse you should get in. Do you know if the experience is a requirement or not. I thought it was if I am not mistaken,a coworker of mine said that it was and that experience had to be in a paid position. She had planned to apply to the May Cohort for next year since she has been volunteering at the clinic I work at. You should try to apply for a position within a hospital just in case they say they need patient care experience in the event that you do not have it. I have been accepted in the program and I scored a 86 in reading 92 in Math. I wish you the best of luck and hopefully we start the program together this January. Good Luck!

I can certainly understand your concerns with transfer credits. Here is what I do know.

If your classes are all 5 years or less, you will get transfer credit. The courses will need to be the same course with equal credits. Example: A and P 1 and 2 as well as Micro are all 4.5 credit classes with lab at Kaplan. All GE classes are 3 credits.

One thing to consider- if you transfer in everything, you may not be taking enough credits per semester to get financial aid or fed loans. I know a couple of gals that have been paying cash or using private loans because they are taking only med surg classes which happen to be only 5 credits each. The magic number is to take at least 6 credits per term from what I understand.

Lastly- teachers with the sink or swim teaching style are everywhere, especially in nursing school. It seems like they do not care, but in reality they are forcing students to use critical thinking skills. I never like it when I have classes like this, but I will say that it has forced me to study more, use every possible resource out there and work with other students to better understand the content.

Wishing you the best!

Just to answer the question regarding experience. If nothing has changed, I believe it is a min. of six months patient care experience OR a bachelor degree. I do agree that getting a part time job in patient care will help a lot while in the program and after graduation, but I don't think it is a requirement.

Best of luck to all in January!

My advisor said you can have work related experience or a bachelors degree. You get max points for either. She said she is turning everything in today and we should hear back within the next 2 weeks. I feel pretty confident about getting in...but you never know!

I took all of my science courses within the past year, so I am fine with those transfer credits. My gen ed classes were all within the past 6 years as well. I think I will be able to make financial aide since I still have Micro to take and maybe one or two other classes.

Good. Then it hasn't changed!

I'm sure you'll get in!

Hi EVLGNUS:

Be encouraged. I scored 77 on the exam when I first took and bought a TEAS book, studied for a couple weeks and retook the exam, scoring 95% on the English portion which was the part I needed to score more on. My strategy with the exam was to not pick the most obvious answer because upon closer inspection, some of those obvious answers are trick answers.

Anyway. It is very possible to prepare for the exam and retake to a higher score.

Hey Tmonteverdi,

I am glad to hear that, I wasn't 100% about that's why I said if I am not mistaken, I do hope that you receive good news. It would be great to go to class kind of knowing who some of the other students are. In any case please let us know the good news when you receive it!

Roxy

Roxy,

I heard a few days before Thanksgiving that I got in! I'm glad that we will be classmates!! Have you taken any pre-req classes? The only ones I need are microbiology and the nursing strategies class.
