Anyone have any comments or suggestions about Kansas CIty are ER's. Wife is thinking about applying to Med School there. I'm specificly looking at ER jobs.

Thanks

Right now I work at Shawnee Mission in the ER as an admitter, getting ready to move upstairs to Telemetry as a nursing assistant. I really wanted to stay in the ER but there weren't any open positions at the time. It's the busiest ER in the city, but not a trauma center. Can't say that I've really heard anything horrible about any particular hospital. SMMC is pretty highly acclaimed, lots of awards and honors. Truly a great place to work for. Good luck to you and your wife!

Plenty of good ER's in KC. Shouldn't be a problem. :)

Craig,

There are a number of choices for ER's in the Kansas City area as I am sure you are aware of at this time, but as for teaching facilities, Truman Medical Center gets my vote. It is the teaching hospital for UMKC School of Medicine, and offers alot of great learing experiences for students all the way around. Great staff, new facility (ER is newly remodled) and just about everything one could imagine as far as cases.

Hope this helps!

I did clinicals at KU Med center. It was awesome. They can serve upwards of 50 some patients/beds. The staff was wonderful. KU is a good med school as well. It's in KCK and centrally located to Kansas City mo, or Kansas City KS and out lying areas. I live in a suburb of KC in KS. My husband is a firefighter. All their traumas go to KU.

To be honest, the shawnee mission medical center ER scares me if I were to work there. I cut my finger so I went in for some stitches. The triage nurse starts going off about how she hates her job and how the hospital is messing with the nurses or something. Then I go to the back and the nurse back there is complaining to me as well. They didn't even know I was a nursing student, so it wasn't a warning.

I hope this was just an isolated incident with just 2 nurses, but it was a very shady situation.

I think it depends on what you are interested in. If you like community based nursing, with no trauma, but lots of CP then Shawnee Mission Medical Center is your hospital. If you are interested in strokes, then St. Luke's on the Plaza is your best best (they have the MERCI device and do IAtPA). If you like GSW's, MVC's and young really really sick patients, then Truman is your best bet. I don;t know anything about KUMed other than they are an HCA hospital. That's all I need to know.

Shawnee Mission, and St. Luke's do interventional caths whereas Truman does not so if you're a heart man, I would say St. Luke's or SMMC

GEEK,

I believe that you are wrong in saying that KU MED is a HCA Hospital, they are part of The University of Kansas, and are not a part of HCA. That is unless they were bought out very recently.

There are a very large number of area hospitals that are a part of the HCA family, and I would have to agree with the part of your statement, "That's all I need to know". I sure would not work for an HCA hospital!

Dan,

I finished clinicals there in December. They were not HCA at that time. I would imagine if it had changed that would be big news. They are however appling for magnet status. KU does get tons of GSW, Auto, and other traumas. They have a hole floor devoted to trauma.

oops! sorry, it's Research not KUMed. I know nothing of KUMed. Have never worked there nor has anyone said anything about it. Of Research, both physicians and ex staff have complained bitterly about the takeover. I'm still learning KC lore

Hey Geek,

No problem, but your correct about most folks not being happy with HCA facilities, I hear about it first hand all of the time, because the wife works at one of them!

Peace Out,
