Just Started School & Pregnant

Published

I just started an LPN program last week and found out (unexpectedly) that I am pregnant with my 4th child! I know I can make it through the program because I WANT to. My question is do I have to notify the school? Or is it not really that important? I haven't even had my first OB visit yet... I am nervous that they may suggest I take time off. They can't force me, right? I really am uneasy about everyone finding out.

We just had a girl deliver from our class this semester. She came into the program showing and worked her butt off. We had two different clinical groups in class. They helped her by letting her double-up on her clinicals (attend both groups) during her pregnancy so that she would be mostly done two weeks before she was due! It was actually extra work for her, but she pulled it off and the day after her LAST clinical we all got a text in the middle of the night 'It's Time!'. THe only thing she had to reschedule was an exam. In addition to what everyone else here says about protecting yourself, making sure you're healthy and keeping your baby healthy, scheduling is something I would ask if they could help you with. You can absolutely do this. Mazel Tov and congrats!

Yes, you need to notify the school b/c in an LPN program, the instructors need to know because you shouldn't be in the same room as patient's with certain infectious diseases and you shouldn't touch certain medications.

What you do need to discuss with them is your options of making up clinical if you are out on maternity leave. The instructors cannot permit you to do clinicals until you have a 100% release from your physician and most physicians won't "write you out" for less than 4 weeks. The facility will most likely have a similar policy. You can, however, attend classes.

PS: I personally find it very terrifying that any school would not require a medical clearance. Never heard of that.
